Kindergarten-Grade 2–Mr. Hopper's class is planning for Family Night, and Luna suggests a Midnight Circus, a celebration perfectly attuned to her own passion for planets and stars. Instead, her classmates embrace the idea of a traditional circus, dividing into groups of lions, tigers, and bears, while Luna grows even more single-minded in her celestial fascination. As a new student, she has experienced some anxiety; now her adjustment is further compromised as classmates are confused by her obsession. When the second graders are forced to make a sudden program change, Mr. Hopper rallies the children around Luna's creative idea to bring the Midnight Circus to Room 75. On Family Night Luna is beaming, her sense of validation and acceptance reflected back to her wise and gentle teacher. By clearly evoking the discomfort and quirky behavior of the new kid in class, this story offers great discussion possibilities. It is a typical leveled reader with short sentences and chapters and an ample number of engaging cartoon drawings. In a nice take on the outsider story, this lively chapter book in the I Can Read! series uses a classroom setting to open up ideas not only about the new kid who is different and interesting but also about science and language. When Luna suggests that the class do a show about the night sky for Family Night, all the kids look at her as if she were "the new kid from outer space." But the wonderful teacher quietly supports her idea, and the classroom performance with stars in a midnight circus proves a great success. The puns are part of the fun, and Carter's colorful illustrations show the classroom play with the best teacher there in the background. Pair this with Kenah's The Best Seat in Second Grade (2005). The Best ........in 2 Grade are really the Best.

I've purchased three of The Best....In Second Grade stories to give to my granddaughter when school lets out in June. It will give her some fresh stories for summer reading and get her thinking positively about moving into second grade in September. All of the books are beautifully illustrated and have story lines that kids will find interesting. The Best Teacher in Second Grade is about Luna, the new girl who started mid year and was feeling like an outsider. Luna's passion for the night sky turns Family Night into the best show ever after Mr. Cooper persuades the other students to listen to Luna's ideas.
The I Can Read books are great for pre-readers, kids just learning to read or those who are a little more confident. Stage 2 for kids who need a little help or those who can use them to keep the skills they already have.

Love these "Second Grade" books!

My daughter, in second grade, is receiving supplemental reading help and alot of the leveled readers in Scholastic book orders are just way to difficult for her right now. Or they are too "babyish" in content. These books are perfect for her: they are chapter books, they have repetitive words for lots of practice, and they are well-written stories that aren't overwhelming in vocabulary or sentence structure. I hope the auther continues to write more!

Good story and challenging words for little readers

Great book with a lot of challenging words for little readers.
The proper names can be tough some times because they use weird names. But I'm not going to take any stars off for that.
