This is one of the best books I've ever read about memorizing scripture. It not only is a practical guide, but the author makes it very clear that it's not just memorizing, but it's knowing the Word and thus knowing God more intimately. I highly recommend it!

When you're hungry for God

Recently, I spent a few days fasting and praying to help me hear God as I made an important decision. I left that time with a deeper desire to just know God. After evaluating my spiritual practices and lack of time to do much more, I felt that memorizing Scripture consistently would give me the opportunity to meditate on God throughout the day. As a teen, I had memorized chapters of the Bible for competitions, and I grew a lot through the time I spent in the Word.

I bought the book hoping it would help me as I started memorizing again. I loved how she emphasizes that the purpose of memorizing is to develop a closer walk with God. It's not about becoming the Bible know-it-all or even to have the perfect verse for other people just when they need it. It's just to help you spend time meditating on God, allowing Him to speak to you.

While dealing with such spiritual topics, the book is also very practical. She gives tips on where to memorize, what to memorize, how to prepare your materials to help you memorize, and so on. She suggests a verse a day, and she shows through her life how easy that can be - reviewing while you're in the shower, driving to work, or waiting for your kids at school. The book includes a day-by-day guide through memorizing a few Bible chapters, in which she asks questions and makes points about what the passage teaches to help you get in the habit of really meditating on the Word and not just memorizing it.

The book is geared to people who have little experience memorizing and meditating on the Bible, which is good. It's also written as if everyone reading it is a mother. As a result, I didn't read every word or use her suggested chapters, but I found a lot of inspiration and some great tips in the book. Regardless of where you are in your walk with God, this book will inspire you and give you a number of practical ways to make memorizing and meditating on Scripture a part of your life.

The best book I have read on diesel systems

This book very thoroughly explains the functions of the diesel injection systems. I would guess you could say Bosch wrote the book on diesel injection and this is the book.

There seems to be something odd about some of the wording in the book. I guess it is the translation. I found if I would ask what other words could be substituted, it made it clear. Example: I would substitute the word 'power' where the book uses 'torque'. This makes the book a little slow to read, but once you get the knack of it, you will find the book very informative in understanding the systems.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand diesel systems better. This explains how and why things work, not just what things do.

I only gave it four starts because of the translation. Everything else is there.

As a certified personal and executive coach, Valorie Burton actually works herself out of her job. You see, her most meaningful goal is to teach her clients to coach themselves. I've not ever utilized a personal coach, so I found Valorie's book, Successful Women Think Differently, a dynamic tool to help yourself help yourself through God's power.

The questions Valorie proposes make you dig deep into yourself to really find out who you are and what makes you tick. It's not a haphazard trip, but a methodical journey in changing the way you think so you can succeed in whatever area you need help. Valorie uses typical, personal accounts of real people and how they accomplished this task. They help to convey her message succinctly. "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

Valorie encompasses seven key decisions:

You will be personally confronted in your thinking, as that is where the problems begin; "As a man thinks, so is he."

I read this book in order to provide my review, but it's a book I will need to go back to and answer the questions to glean new insights for myself. In other words, this is a hands-on book. It's a powerful tool if you are willing to invest your time working it through. I highly recommend this book for personal study or even use in a discreet Bible study ("What's said in this room stays in this room" type).

This very detailed recipe book is for any cook - novice to experienced - who wants to explore a variety of Scottish fare. Not only will you learn how to prepare the dishes, you will also learn about their history. Linguists will enjoy learning about the etymology of ingredients, utensils and the dishes themselves. You'll end up wanting to get a "spurtle", keep neeps in your larder and add rumbledethumps, cullen skink and atholl brose to your menus - and it's even better if you like oatmeal. Catherine Brown has done an excellent job in compiling Classic Scots Cookery. I recommend this book highly.

A Great Witnessing Tool With a Different Approach

Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort have teamed up to produce what I think is a great witnessing tool. May authors use the approach that accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of your life will make you feel happy and fulfilled in this life. Instead, Cameron and Comfort use the Old Testament Law (10 Commandments) to show how EVERYONE at some point and time in their life has broken at least one of the commandments and is danger of God's judgement. Additionally, the emphasis is also on the next life since we will spend far more time in heaven or hell than here on earth.

We had this course taught at our church and the basic class format is as follows: go over what we learned from the previous week's assignment, watch the DVD that goes with the book, discuss the DVD, and go over next week's assignment.

The book's chapters are as follows:

1. Cultivating Compassion for the Lost.

2. Discovering Hell's Best Kept Secret.

3. Learning to Overcome Fear.

4. Practicing What You Preach.

5. Crafting the Message.

6. Answering the Top Ten Questions.

Refreshing, engaging, useable

This review was written by my son, Brian Jennings, a 33-year-old minister in Tulsa, OK. and posted on his VIRB (blog) site.

The book is mostly a narrative. Vines was at a hotel when the hotel manager found out that he was a Christian speaker. She invited him to dinner with her staff and he accepted. What he didn't know was that the whole thing was a set-up. Within the first few moments of dinner it became apparent that the staff's plan was to ridicule him for believing in God. But Vines did not flinch and did not become defensive. He simply asked if they could engage in an intellectual conversation. What followed was a conversation that went way past midnight. The conversation included anger, humor, mocking and tears. But in the end... well, I won't tell you. But you should read it.

I've read lots of "apologetic" books (books that defend the Bible, God or Christianity), but typically their approach is to offer logic and proof in the form of "Here's why you should believe." Dinner with Skeptics was refreshing because it actually lets us read how the conversation played out. It made the book very engaging (I typically don't read books like this in 2 days).

There are "asides" in the book where Vines takes a time-out from the story to explain why he chose to say what he did, or to expound on the topic. These were helpful breaks from the story.

I would suggest this book for anyone who is struggling with understanding why there is pain, evil and suffering in this world. Vines' insights were helpful to me personally and I have already had opportunity to use some of what I've learned when talking with others.

Good Answers To Tough Questions

Christian Apologetics covers a wide variety of subjects and depending upon the audience can range from simple treatments of common questions to very detailed erudite examinations of specific points of an argument. This book is clearly aimed at the general public and offers easy to understand answers to the common objections raised by skeptics to a good and omnipotent God existing because of all the evil in the world. It deals with the various manifestations of these criticisms and provides reasonable answers to each objection.

My first encounter with the writing of Jeff Vines came via an abbreviated version of this same story published in The Christian Standard as a 3 part series on August 13th, 20th & 27th of 2006. The story was compelling then and is even more compelling in the fuller format of the book.

I'm not sure if the dinner and conversations recounted in this book are factual events or fictitious characters invented to allow Jeff to make his points. They are presented in a manner that makes me think they are real events but there are parts of this story that seem almost too incredible. One of the people at this dinner reportedly was in a distraught emotional state, even crying for the 6+ hours this dinner and conversation lasted yet not one person at the dinner raised a question about her emotional state before Jeff approached her almost 6 hours into the meal and discussion. Imagining a scenario where this could occur is difficult. A boss and her employees making a practice of regularly eating dinner together after work is also a management-employee relationship that is at minimum very unusual. The order in which the skeptic's questions come and their willingness to accept the answers given is tailor made for the Apologist to make his argument. This situation is almost too good to be true but life is often stranger than fiction.

As a Christian with a deep interest in Christian Apologetics I am personally very distressed by much of what passes as scholarship in apologetics circles. There are quality books and material, available but a significant amount of the material is Apologists quoting or misquoting each other and often taking quotes out of their original context. That is why I cringed when seeing in the introduction that Jeff had added a footnote to his comparison of a tornado passing through a junkyard and assembling a fully functioning 747 as describing how one of the dinner guests viewed God's likeliness of recovering from where she perceived God had gone. The footnote referenced the original source. The tornado example originated in astronomer Fred Hoyle's 1983 book *The Intelligent Universe*. Hoyle was a proponent of a theory that life was transmitted to the Earth via microbes traveling in comets. He was arguing against the impossibility of the abiogenesis required by other evolutionists that believe life auto-organized on this planet. Hoyle wrote the following passage:
"A junkyard contains all the bits and pieces of a Boeing 747, dismembered and in disarray. A whirlwind happens to blow through the yard. What is the chance that after its passage a fully assembled 747, ready to fly, will be found standing there? So small as to be negligible, even if a tornado were to blow through enough junkyards to fill the whole Universe." (p.19)
I have no objection to the paraphrase of this example but since the quote in its original context has no connection to the context Jeff is using it in, then the footnote is not applicable. The way some Apologists quote and misquote each other I almost expect a book by another author, quoting Vines, paraphrasing Hoyle and now claiming that Hoyle was making a theological claim.

With those few minor caveats I found the book to be engaging and helpful to those people either struggling with the questions surrounding the problem of evil themselves or for lay believers that are looking for simple and practical arguments to answer these questions. The book puts in the format of a dinner conversation the questions that most believers have heard from skeptics at one time or another concerning reconciling our belief in a good and omnipotent God and various aspects of the problem of evil.

In the interest of full disclosure I should note that Jeff Vines recently became the senior pastor of my church which might lead some people to believe that I would endorse anything he wrote. However, while I like, respect and on many occasions agree with Jeff Vines, I'm am not his sycophant. He and I have numerous areas of disagreement but I don't expect to agree with any man 100% of the time. However, tackling complex theological issues in ways that are easy to understand and practical in the lives of non-theologians is something that Jeff Vines does very well. For the reader who is looking for clear answers to some tough questions concerning God and evil this book is a good start.

Jeff Vines truly walks the walk!

I met Jeff Vines when my husband was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield, GA. We became members of Savannah Christian Church, where Jeff taught on Wednesday evenings, and preached quite often. This story is in fact true, and having experienced the authenticity of Jeff's faith and character firsthand, I can say that he truly walks the walk!

When we first came to Savannah, we visited Savannah Christian Church. I began having a conversation with Jeff's wife, Robin, not knowing who she was. Robin sort of took me under her wing, per say. She invited me to her home, where she and I shared stories from our lives. Any christian who has been obedient enough to walk out on faith has at least one big, unbelievable "God" story. This is the proof that God gives us, as encouragement. It is difficult often times to share these things with the world, because they are so miraculous that it leaves much room for doubt by those who have never experienced the like.

I began attending the same Sunday School class with Robin every week. It was really amazing that she was in class the day that I had MY incredible, unbelievable "God" moment take place regarding a mission trip to Poland.

When my husband came home from Iraq, he came up after service one week to shake Jeff's hand. Seeing that my husband was in the Army, Jeff invited him out to lunch later that week. When my husband called to schedule the lunch, Jeff's secretary laughed saying "That man takes everyone to lunch!" This is true! Jeff Vines not only invites strangers to lunch, but asks them for lists of ways that He can pray for them, and needs that the church can help meet. The brilliant theologian that he is, it is no wonder that God would allow him to participate in such an amazing exchange. "The Shack" is fiction. Jeff Vines is just an honest, true blue, disciplined, educated follower of Jesus Christ.

I have never heard this man boast about himself, he is truly humble. He wrote this book to give glory to God, for the difinitive privilege given him to lead others to Christ.

Nice Play!

To date, Edward Albee has won three Pulitzer prizes, has written one of the most famous plays ever--WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? (surprisingly not among the three)--and also has written the most famous one-act ever, THE ZOO STORY. A DELICATE BALANCE is one of the Pulitzer winners; anyone who cares about theatre will love this. In performance an electrifying evening, it is also a darn good read--again and again. A tragedy at times hilarious, the stylized piece is an examination of friendship contrasted with family, in which the playwright creates six delicous characters--roles actors especially love and often perform brilliantly. Katherine Hepburn's filmed version comes to mind--a near perfect expression of the matriarch Agnes, who has several problems: her alcoholic sister is drinking in the living room, her daughter is coming home after a failed 4th marriage, and her friends Edna and Harry have decided to move in because they are "afraid" of something. Agnes's husband Tobias is polite, detached, and reasonable. Against bristling tension, the author uses drunken Claire as comic counterpoint to brilliant effect, giving her an accordion (of all things) as prop with which to accent and poke fun. (There's a wonderful sight gag near the end where this character, who isn't supposed to have one drink, is discovered holding two.) We also smile when mousy Edna tries to re-decorate Agnes's home and speaks to the divorcing Julia as if she were her own daughter. (How easily shyness moves to assertiveness, then imperceptibly to cruelty.) So we laugh to keep from crying--but laugh we do! And although Agnes is unforgettable, nevertheless it is Tobias who gets the climactic "aria," an attempt to put his house in order. The dramatist calls our bluff on what we mean by "friends," fusing big ideas in three elegant acts, crystallizing mysterious beauty from carefully chosen words. The result is a theatrical touchstone, one of Edward Albee's many masterpieces, a magnificent gem of a play.

One of Albee's Best

Albee, the playwright who invented one of the more complicated and vivid relationships ever in a play in ZOO STORY, has again demonstrated his intimate knowledge of the deeper motives behind human interaction. Every interaction between characters in this play -- from long monologues to short snippets of conversation -- has behind it some manner of conflict.
Everybody in this play needs change, and can only reach it through the destruction of others; Tobias and Agnes who simply want to be left alone, but whose house has been invaded; Julia, the daughter who is betrayed by the fact that her parents gave away her room; Claire, who wants only to excercise her right to a good time; Edna and Harry who aren't quite sure what they need, and subsequently frustrate everyone else.
This is a very heavy play, but written in a such a way that is has the guise of being a comedy. A must-read for anybody that loves drama.

I am writing ANOTHER review because I CANNOT EXPRESS to you how wonderful this play is. I just read it for the second time. It is one of the three best plays I have every read in my life, and believe me, I have read all the plays worth reading. This is almost as good as "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Once again, I love love love love love this play and all the characters. There is a movie. Don't see it. The play is better. Read the play. There are many great moments: Tobias' "cat speech," Tobias' memorable four-page closing speech, all of Act Two Scene Two, all of Act Three, Claire's disturbing interpretation of what it's like to be an alcoholic...they go on and on. This is my theory of what the play is about essentially: this is the story of a family who does nothing all day but sit and drink and b*tch about how terrible their lives are. They have lots of money. They have good friends and a good family. But they have let their lives go to waste. They've let life pass them by. Now they are old and sit back and realize how much they've missed. But not before much turmoil and anger are let out. There are a husband and wife in the play who sleep in separate beds, until one night, for lack of room, they are forced to sleep together and they realize: THEY LIKE IT. But they have wasted years and years of sleeping in separate beds. Am I rambling like a lunatic? Sorry. Just read it please or else I have typed all of this for no reason at all.
