About the Author

Patricia Cornwell was born in Florida and raised in North Carolina. She sold her first novel, Postmortem, while working as a computer analyst at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond, Virginia. Sickert may have been odd -- but was he really Jack-the-Ripper?

Cornwell here restates her assertion (as previously presented in her PORTRAIT OF A KILLER and CHASING THE RIPPER) that Walter Sickert, a famous painter, was also the infamous Jack-the-Ripper. While she succeeds in demonstrating that Sickert was eccentric (but which truly great artist isn't to some extent?) she does NOT succeed in proving -- at least to MY satisfaction -- that he was a murderer let alone that he was the Ripper. Yes, there is typical (and quite interesting, though questionable) Cornwellian forensic "evidence" presented, but even that cannot overcome other factors that would tend to preclude him as a viable suspect.

I have read numerous other books about the Ripper murders over a long lifetime, more than a few of which claimed to identify the "real" Jack; some of them actually made compelling arguments for their (different) candidates. Rather recently, Russell Edwards in NAMING JACK THE RIPPER used forensic DNA evidence to support HIS candidate; I distrust his overall methodology but tend to be more inclined to believe his choice of perpetrator (someone not infrequently identified by others as well). But being "more inclined" doesn't mean I am in any way fully convinced.

Cornwell's book, while it was fascinating to read, also left me unconvinced. Of course, YOU might decide otherwise, so give the book a try and make up your own mind. After all, it IS well-written, and whether she's right or wrong, or whether you agree with her or not, it's still an intriguing case to read about, ponder, and discuss. In so doing, you may also choose to read a more encyclopedic work (such as THE COMPLETE JACK THE RIPPER by Donald Rumbelow), one that provides objective, impartial information about ALL the possible Ripper suspects; you may be surprised at how your initial predilection for any one candidate (whether Sickert or someone else) might, ultimately, be swayed by examining other strong contenders.

Entertaining but probably not in the way she intended.

Cornwell's work on the Ripper is entertaining - not in the manner of a master detective putting the pieces together. More in the manner of an eccentric aunt who comes to family get-togethers once every few years and, after drinking a few glasses of wine, will tell you exactly who killed Kennedy and why with the authority of someone who was there even though she wasn't born at the time.
Cornwell's entire case is subjective and her facts are mostly insinuation.
In fact, her book should be taught in classrooms as a classic example of how to create propaganda. She conflates Sickert and the Ripper constantly - not even separating the two in the most basic sense of the persona of the Ripper vs the persona of Sickert. Often she'll use the name Sickert when referring to the Rippers actions and call Sickert the Ripper when referring to Sickert's known actions. It was a little confusing at times.
Facts about Sickert are placed next to possible activities of the Ripper - one example that made me laugh out loud is a bloody bakers knife that might have been from a Ripper crime next to "Sickert loved to bake". That sounds like evidence to me. Jeez.
Its hard to say how she came to her conclusions about Sickert's inner life and relationships. Quotes about him are usually completely decontextualized - in one section a whole sentence is made out of multiple one or two word quotes. She does have a good explanation as to why she doesn't quote more extensively (the people who control these sources wouldn't give permission). I'd be more inclined to believe her version of these stories but her whole perspective of Sickert seems to be colored by the intense emotional response she had to his paintings. I looked at many of the paintings she references and I have to say I do NOT see what she sees.
Suddenly everything is evidence of guilt, even stuff that was common (Sickert was intrigued by the Ripper, snubbed Oscar Wilde after his imprisonment and owned a red kerchief) and a few things that contradicted. Sickert didn't regularly date or mark location on his letters. SNEAKY. Sickert regularly made dated drawings that showed exactly where he was. Oh slipped up! He could have been near some Ripper killings. Sickert was a germophobe. Ripper probably killed in a manner that would make it easier to avoid bodily fluids. Ripper wrapped body parts in newspaper. Sickert wrapped paintings in newspaper. Sickert had multiple art studios. No one knew their locations so now they're bolt holes. Maybe they're near the murders? Who knows? Sounds incriminating to me. Ripper might have worn disguises. Sickert had a habit of wearing disguises. I mean, really?
Supposedly she showed her evidence to an officer who said she had enough for a search warrant. I'd like to know what evidence that was, because I see no evidence.
There are a few interesting points she makes. Its probable that Sickert (or someone close to him) wrote a couple of "Ripper letters". This isn't really surprising - based on what I've read about the time period Ripper letters were the Twitter parody accounts of the time. I've read at least one contemporary account (that unfortunately I don't remember the source for) that casually mentioned a relative who wrote Ripper letters and then watched for them in the papers. Its only significant because Cornwell has decided that most of the Ripper letters are "real". Her evidence? A handwriting expert that determined that most of the letters were written by the same person imitating different hands. Bizarrely in the book she actually points out at some length that handwriting isn't a science but still uses this determination as authorative. She doesn't appear to worry about or discuss any letters that she can't directly examine except for the From Hell letter (which is the most likely to be "legitimate" due to the included kidney).
It does appear there were more Ripper killings that commonly acknowledged though I don't agree with all of the killings she places under that umbrella (usually due to the killings closeness to where Sickert might have been) and it does seem likely that some of the Ripper letters might have been written by other killers who were either copycats or triggered into fulfilling murderous desires after reading the detailed newspaper accounts. But her conclusions that all of them are legitimate is a stretch.
There's also a strange undercurrent of anti-intellectualism. She lists off the many languages Sickert knew as if they were evidence. She claims very basic rhymes in Ripper letters are "too clever for an illiterate." Whenever she hits an investigative dead end she treats it like a purposeful act of the Ripper - as if he predicted her investigation and the kind of technology we'd have today.
Cornwell appears to dislike Sickert intensely. I'm sure she would crisply say that she dislikes Sickert because she dislikes murderers. She handwaves away all arguments against her beliefs as people defending Sickert for their own reasons. I've heard some cynical views of why she's so intense on this issue (she did buy a lot of Sickert art and memorabilia before publishing her first book) - I tend to think she's a true believer.
I'm not going to say Sickert was an angel - if her account is to be believed (and I'm not sure it is) it sounds like Sickert was a deeply unpleasant man who had his share of secrets. I suppose this book doesn't DISPROVE anything and Sickert has been linked to the Ripper murders before. But men have been cold to their wives, told wild third hand tales about famous murderers, and had strange habits without being murderers throughout human history. Even her most compelling evidence requires accepting a lot of assumptions.
Anyway this is an entertaining book - even a thought provoking one. If you enjoy conspiracy theories as thought experiments this might be up your alley.

I have never seen so many "what if's", "Possiblys" and "Could haves" in a book. I like Patricial Cornwell very much but I just couldn't get into the speculation.

Great Ramen Cookbook!

Yes, I am a committed fan of ramen. I search for restaurants serving ramen when I travel. I make my own noodles at home. I am a ramen addict. So when I saw this book I did my happy dance and clicked the keys to have it in my hands. What I love about these recipes is that she pushes you to be creative, make it yours. Great ramen recipes!

About the Author

Eran Dinur is an Emmy and VES award-winning VFX supervisor, artist, and instructor. His work at ILM Singapore includes films such as Iron Man, Star Trek, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Terminator Salvation. Since 2011 Eran has served as the VFX supervisor of NYC-based company Brainstorm Digital on numerous film and TV projects, including The Wolf of Wall Street, Boardwalk Empire, The Lost City of Z, Café Society, Nerve, Delivery Man, The Heat, The Men Who Built America, and The Immigrant. Eran won a Primetime Emmy Award as well as two Visual Effects Society Awards for his work on Boardwalk Empire. Eran teaches VFX production skills at the School of Visual Arts, has created popular online courses at fxphd, has written numerous articles for 3D World Magazine, and has presented at various international conferences including SIGGRAPH, NAB, and Mundos Digitales.

EXACTLY what I needed.

I actually bought this book at Sam French brick and mortar but I had to write a review. I am about to direct a feature which while no blockbuster still has a serious budget and will not only require visual effects but I know I need them to stretch my budget and production value. This book is written in a very comprehensible cogent manner. Every accomplished story teller should look at this as a gift to expanding their craft and their scope of filmmaking.

I am so grateful that Mr. Dinur wrote this book at it came out just at the right time for me. Fantastic!

Pleasantly Surprised!

I checked this out at the library more with a view to understanding the process of composition than to set out to compose. With the little bit of theory I have (Grade 5) and with the author's insights on creating melodies, I was able to compose two short pieces for piano. They sound pretty good, too! I am working on a third piece, and have just placed an order for this book.
Miller writes in a nice, lucid style, and makes the process of composing seem quite do-able. I gravitated to creating the melody first and then harmonizing it, but Miller acknowledges that many people might prefer to start with a chord progression, and shows you how to compose in this way as well.
It's helpful to have trained one's ear (the Paul Harris books and Musicians' Institute publication are very good) and to have 2-3 years of playing under one's belt. By that time you've seen enough scores and done enough theory to be up and running after a perusal of this book. It's also a good idea to work through the exercises - I do mean to do start doing the exercises, but couldn't help writing up more than just 4-8 measures of a melody line.

A little trick to make it work...

Michael Miller's book is an excellent source guide and teacher for learning to compose music. Simple as that. The trick, however, is to actually do and practice what he suggests. This is not a volume intended for a would-be composer to read through and then expect to be a composer when done with the reading.

Every suggestion, every exercise has a specific purpose. When you come upon a suggestion or an exercise, stop reading and work on it. Make a project out of it so as to really learn the process, the idea, the reason behind it. Unless the would-be composer takes the time to actually do the work, he or she simply will not develop his or her skills as they otherwise would. And will.

I have been composing and arranging for quite some time but just when I thought I had made another purchase not exactly worthwhile, I had another thought to just stop and do what Mr. Miller suggests. What a difference!

This book is not the only means to an end. But it has much to offer in developing skills, learning the theory behind composing, and great suggestions for enhancing what you already have in your arsenal.

Take the time to do what Mr. Miller says. You will grow. You will learn. And you will find your work enhanced and maturing. This little trick can make a big difference.

This is a great book if you have an intermediate understanding of music theory and an interest in the inner workings of composition. Just be clear to note that this book does not address songwriting. It is packed full of the backbones of songwriting like structure, harmony, rhythm and melody but it does not apply it to a pop music media. Reading this book will give you a good grasp of how these things come together to form a composition but if you're looking to learn about the art of writing a song then it is best you look elsewhere.

It is an easy read and has tons of examples. There is no accompanying CD so if you cannot sight read, the examples probably won't help you. If this sounds like you, reading a basic music theory book beforehand would be a wise choice.

The 4th Edition of GPS for Land Surveyors Is Detailed yet Understandable

Jan Van Sickle's GPS for Land Surveyors book provides an excellent resource for anyone teaching or learning about GPS, surveying, or related geotechnologies. It strikes a good balance between providing enough technical details about such complex topics as multipath errors, how to draw baselines, and how to calibrate a site, but yet the book at the same time is approachable and understandable. Jan provides much insight into biases and error in GPS signals and procedures, and how to manage error. Thorough treatment is given to receivers, methods, coordinate systems, datums, geoids and ellipsoids, real time kinematic GPS, differential GPS, and much more. The color illustrations are very thoughtfully done and enhance understanding. This is the 4th edition of the book, but the new edition is definitely worthwhile - it provides a great amount of additional and updated material, including GNSS initiatives around the world. Each chapter contains a set of quiz questions and answers, which aids the book's utility as an instructional tool in a university setting or for those working through the book independently. It is not a "given" to find someone so knowledgeable about this topic and yet be such a good instructor, but Jan Van Sickle is both, and both of these traits are quite evident in this book.

An Excellent book for GPS/GNSS Surveying

This book is a great resource for students wanting to become land surveyors and land surveyors that plan to use GNSS receivers in their workplace. I taught a class on GPS Surveying at a technical college using his 3rd edition and plan to use the 4th edition now. Updates to the 4th edition have been added to stay current with changes in technology. I believe the book provides the reader with a comprehensive understanding of the topic. The format of the book is well organized. The illustrations are excellent. I think this is book would make an excellent addition to anyone's library for surveying. I strongly recommend this book for all interested in a better understanding of GPS/GNSS technology.

One of the best GPS books

Dr. Van Sickle's 4th edition of the "GPS for Land Surveyors" book is one of the top ten in the market. As usual for Dr. Van Sickle, the book provides a great amount of precious information to the reader as well as insight into the future technology of the GPS/GNSS world. One of the most amazing things for this books is the language. The GPS/GNSS technology and science is not easy, but it is presented in a way that is easy to understand. The presence of high quality illustrations, mathematical equations, and questions to answer makes this book one of the most valuable GPS/GNSS textbooks for Surveying and GPS/GNSS classes at the universities. Based on my personal experience I would say that this book is equally valuable for laymen, professional land surveyors, and students.

About the Author
Avraham Faust is associate professor of archaeology in the Martin (Szusz) Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology, Bar-Ilan University, Israel, and the director of the Institute of Archaeology at that university. He excavated at several sites in Israel and the UK and is currently directing the excavations at Tel 'Eton in Israel. His research concentrates on Bronze and Iron Age Israel, mainly from an anthropological perspective and he is the author of The Israelite Society in the Period of the Monarchy: an Archaeological Perspective (2005, Yad Ben Zvi; in Hebrew).

A fresh approach to an old question

The author sets out to apply anthropological analysis to data from the many archaeological excavations in the historical Land of Israel, in order to deduce when Israelite ethnicity emerged, and by what "markers" it can be identified. By using the Bible - a "problematic" source for most academics - only as a secondary source, the author hopes to avoid the criticism directed at what is now universally villified as "Biblical archaeology". The main period to which he directs his attention is the Iron Age I period (1200 to 1000 BCE), after which time (Iron Age II, 1000 to 600 BCE) many archaeologists accept that, under the unified monarchy of David and Solomon, Israelite ethnic identity was well established. The author's methodology is to enumerate traits - primarily from the archaeological record, but also from the Bible - that are recognized as markers of Israelite identity in Iron II, and to go back to Iron I to see which of these traits existed in that earlier period, and how they might have been "canonised" as defining Israelite identity.

Among the traits he identifies from the archaelogical record are: not eating pork (absence or scarcity of pig bones at a site), the presence of "four-roomed" houses, absence of monumental burials, Collar Rim Jars ( large jars with a characteristic collar, used for storage of both liquids and solids), undecorated pottery, absence of imported pottery, and relatively small variety of pottery. Many of these traits support the notion of an "egalitarian ethos", a characterization of early Israelite society (i.e. before the monarchy was established) which has been used by many archaeologists. To some extent these traits contrast with those of the Canaanite sites that both preceded and were contemporary with Iron I; but the major contrast is with the Philistine sites on the the southern coastal plain. At Philistines sites, very complex assemblages are found of their characteristic monochrome and bichrome decorated pottery; a high percentage of the animal bones found are pig, and the four-room style of house is rarely found. . The other important Israelite ethnic trait - although not one that leaves its mark in the archaeological record - is circumcision; in the Bible, the Philistines are often referred to with the epithet "the uncircumcised". The author cites many examples of how neighboring ethnic groups, who are in competition with each other for resources, avoid using artifacts or behaviors typical of the other - so-called "high boundary maintenance" - and how such habits - once lacking any particular meaning - become a group's defining characteristics in relation to the other group. He argues that Israelite identity was forged in Iron I principally in contrast to that of the Philistines, who represented their major "other".

Because the question of the origins of Israelite ethnicity is one that is contested by many different and sharply contrasting theories - rebel Canaanite serfs or "sedentarized" nomads from east of the Jordan, to mention just two - the author seeks to establish the independence of the "what?and when?" of Israelite ethnicity from the "whence ?" Nonetheless he also dives head first into the origins question. He comes to the same sort of conclusion as William Dever*, that Israelite identity was forged during Iron I from a number of diverse groups who had arrived in the central highlands, one of whom - perhaps the dominant one - was the "Israel" mentioned in the late thirteenth century BCE stela of the Egyptian king Mernepta. As this "Israel" is the only specific ethnic group referred to in an extra-Biblical source, the author places the burden of proof on those who would deny the emergence of an Israelite ethnicity in the central highlands during this period.

This is a very accessible book;chapters are short, and end with a useful summary of the conclusions of each. There is a certain repetitive feel to some of the arguments, probably because of the academic rigor, some of the nuances of which are lost on the general reader. The only other barrier to easy reading is the way that the narrative thread frequently dives under a mass of citations, only to re-emerge a paragraph later. The conclusions that the author wishes to reach are clear fairly early on in the book, as is the nature of his principal "other", the Biblical minimalists. However, his methodology is very rigorous and non-polemical; he does exactly what he says that he is setting out to do - an anthropological analysis of archaeological data - and, if he cannot prove every hypothesis about Israelite ethnicity, he certainly does succeed in placing the burden of disproof where it belongs.
