Waste of time

This book ends too prematurely to even be considered a cliffhanger. This is a prequel. I'm not even remotely interested in the ending. Could also use better editing.

Another book cut into 3 or more mini stories....
By Akbookwormaddict
The sex scene was sweet, yet hot and the plot line well written. However this gets a 3 instead of a four because I have developed a pet peeve about what is really one book being broken into 3 or more parts. Im sorry but Im not paying $6 to read the other two thirds of the equivalent of a paperback book.

Short and Sweet!
By Amazon Customer
I enjoyed this book...I felt so sorry for Leslie she got dumped in the tackiest way imaginable and then has the job she always longed for taken away from her as well.Drew (the job thief) ends up being a bit of jerk( while dealing with his own personal struggles) but after getting to know Leslie he ends up falling for her. In the end Leslie finally has something that goes her way for once only to have misfortune struck upon her again....or was taken from her??? Looking forward to the next book!!

From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up—In this collection of dramatic short stories by various authors, all of the protagonists have secrets, though some are more intense and life-altering than others. Other than fulfilling this unifying theme, the entries are quite diverse. They span across several genres, including realistic, paranormal, and historical fiction. Regardless of the setting, these tales tackle often taboo subjects, such as inappropriate relations with teachers, gender issues, and mental disorders. Inclusion of drugs, alcohol, swearing, and liaisons between teens and more mature adults make this work appropriate for older readers. As with any short story collection, the quality of writing varies from one story to another. Some are well written like Chris Lynch's atmospheric and well-paced "Lucky Buoy," while others are poorly executed, like Ron Koertge's "Call Me!" with its feeling of not-quite-coherent randomness. Overall, this collection will resonate with many young adults who have their own secrets as well as readers who vicariously live through the risqu lifestyles of others. VERDICT A very discussible title for fans of Chris Lynch's and Ellen Hopkins's hard-hitting realistic fiction.—Carol Hirsche, Provo City Library, UT

Review
The collection offers many worthy entries.
—Kirkus Reviews

Rather than providing tidy solutions to the characters’ dilemmas, the stories focus on the feelings of entrapment and anxiety that go along with living a lie.
—Publishers Weekly

This collection will resonate with many young adults who have their own secrets as well as readers who vicariously live through the risqu lifestyles of others.... A very discussible title for fans of Chris Lynch’s and Ellen Hopkins’s hard-hitting realistic fiction.
—School Library Journal

This new collection of short stories about secrets is an ideal combination of form and subject.... The balance and diversity that Angel has achieved here is marvelous, and nearly any teen who picks this up will find a bit of herself or himself—or at least a friend—inside these pages. A collection to treasure and share widely.
—Booklist

The assortment of approaches to the theme of our secret selves offers plenty of surprises for the reader.
—Horn Book

A thought- provoking collection.
—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

A diverse and realistic anthology
By Liviania
Ann Angel's first outing editing an anthology is an impressive venture. She's gathered a wonderful mix of authors, from established award winners like Chris Lynch and Ellen Wittlinger to talented up to a debut author. The authors aren't just diverse in their name recognition either. THINGS I'LL NEVER SAY: STORIES ABOUT OUR SECRET SELVES dwells in those experiences that are hard to talk about, that people like to never think about.

It's fitting that it is a very diverse anthology, not only the authors, but also the main characters, who are black and white and Asian and gay and bisexual and transgender and suffering from mental illness. Although not all of the stories are realistic, they do strive for a realism about the teen experience, and the multiplicity of points of view represented help support that anthology-wide tone.

I'll admit that the anthology started a little slow for me. The usually reliable Ellen Wittlinger didn't knock it out of the park with "The We-Are-Like-Everybody-Else Game," the story of a girl with a mom who hoards and a friend who might not deserve the title (but one who does). "Cupid's Beaux" by Cynthia Leitich Smith is charming, and a definite delight to me as a fan of her Tantalize series. Will anthology readers who haven't read that series be a little lost?

"When We Were Wild" by Louise Hawes and "Call Me!" by Ron Koertge are both delightfully loose stories, slightly naughty and shaggy with narrators who struggle with their knowledge of their own cruelty. Of the sadder stories, I think I liked "Easter" by Mary Ann Rodman best, for the way it captured loss and teenage confusion and dashed hopes.

"Quick Change" by E.M. Kokie is a little gem about a con artist in a family of con artists, and I want an entire novel about what happens next. (Short stories have been made into novels before! I can hope!) "Storm Clouds Fleeing From the Wind" by Zo Marriott is the standout of the collection. It's an achingly lovely story set in a kingdom that isn't, about a dancer who cannot be matched, especially when furious. Her bio in the back of THINGS I'LL NEVER SAY says that it is related to her novel SHADOWS ON THE MOON, which is now a must-read for me.

Honestly, I could tell you good things about almost all of the stories in the collection. There were a handful that I didn't care for, but there were also two excellent stories and more than half of the stories were good-to-great. I think that's a good ratio for an anthology. With THINGS I'LL NEVER SAY, Ann Angel shows great promise as an anthologist as well as an author.

An excellent anthology!
By The Compulsive Reader
I'm a huge fan of short stories, so it's been great to see a slight increase in YA short story anthologies out lately. I enjoyed My True Love Gave to Me, and I just bought Slasher Girls and Monster Boys. One really great anthology I enjoyed lately (with a lot of my favorite VCFA writers!) was Things I'll Never Say: Stories About Our Secret Selves, edited by Ann Angel.

This anthology includes some really excellent writers, like Cynthia Leitich-Smith, Varian Johnson, Kekla Magoon, Louise Hawes, Chris Lynch, and Ellen Wittlinger. Secrets is a marvelously broad and very appropriate topic for an anthology for teens, and the stories range from speculative to contemporary, containing secrets big and small that all have a powerful hold on the characters who are privy to them. While it's difficult to universal comparisons between all of these incredibly diverse stories, this anthology is more about the effect that secrets have on the characters rather than how to solve the problems that the secrets cause. As a result, this anthology is thought-provoking and surprising.

I loved the realistic stories from Varian Johnson, Ann Angel, and Kekla Magoon, and Cynthia Leitich-Smith's short story set in her Tantalize universe stood on its own, but also will appeal to fans of the series. Most of the stories present situations that are familiar and easily recognizable--parental problems, dating and relationship issues, destructive behavior. Some secrets are larger, more extravagant--secret identities, betrayals, and dangerous relationships. Even the fantastical stories feature secrets that readers will be able to relate to, making for a well-rounded and exciting anthology.

Fantastic collection
By Rita Schopmeyer
These stories are fantastic! If you enjoy short suspenseful stories, then you should pick up your copy today. I'm not much of a reader, so I don't know who these authors are, but reading a sample of each one gives me an idea of who I'd like to buy a book from.

The authors, all high-level black executives, seek to "support women who do not always have access to coaches, mentors, or the 'Old Boys' Network," and their professional advice is savvy and sensitive to the challenges women of color face in the workplace. They offer self-affirming advice to rev up a career, complete with "MAMAisms"-what the authors describe as aphorisms and "familiar terms, both practical and spiritual, that we grew up with and can draw upon as we travel the road to leadership success." The authors revisit and refresh familiar tips on staying positive, honing skill sets, having a plan of action and following through, networking, and avoiding common workplace dilemmas. They also provide valuable advice on achieving work/life balance and finding guidance, mentorship, and support. Offering sound advice, practical tools, and warm wisdom, this book will help black professional women get and stay on track and maximize their abilities.

Good Little Black Book
By SFConsultant
This book has it flaws--I wish that the chapters were longer and a little more fleshed out; I think that the subdivision of each chapter into three parts was not always necessary; and, I wish that the authors had added more illustrative examples from their individual experiences since they each have such interesting, exciting, and successful careers. That being said, I would still recommend this book to anyone (not just African-American women) who wants to more ably manage his or her career. While I had heard some of the tips before, many of them were new and fresh, and they really helped me to reconsider ways that I could accelerate my professional progress. I also really appreciate that, rather than just spouting platitudes, the authors give specific, concrete action steps for their readers to follow in various situations--in my experince, this is rare, so the inclusion is a very notable and welcome change from what is contained in similar literature. Finally, I liked that the book was informative but still a quick and easy read--very useful when trying to balance future professional development with current professional responsiblities. All in all, a good "little black book".

Simply Amazing
By Pamela R. Nelson
The Little Black Book of Success is simply amazing. I have been waiting for a book on leadership that is for women of color for a long time. I have transformed from being "average" to "above average" in the workplace as I read this book and apply the principles. I wish I had this book when I graduated from college eleven years ago. Thank you so much.

Black. Woman. Successful 4.5 Stars
By Angelia Vernon Menchan
I smiled when I saw the title of the book, The Little Black Book of Success by Elaine Meryl Brown, Marsha Haygood and Rhonda Joy McLean, thinking, `Another self-help book for sisters.'However, the fact that Elaine Meryl Brown was one of the co-authors intrigued me because I had read her fiction titles. I will say that The Little Black Book of success is definitely a self-help book, but it is so much more. It is filled from cover to cover with life instructions, career information and simple common sense revelations. What I really enjoyed were the Mama-isms at the end of each chapter such as, `All is fair in love and business,' and a personal favorite, `There is no elevator to success; you must take the stairs.' While the book is filled with advice, it is also witty and interesting.

The Little Black Book of Success is targeted to black women, but every woman under the sun could benefit from reading it and heeding what it offers. I recommend it for all women, of all ages, persuasions or ethnicities.

Rethinking Narcissism: The Bad-and Surprising Good-About Feeling Special, by Dr. Craig Malkin

Harvard Medical School psychologist and Huffington Post blogger Craig Malkin addresses the "narcissism epidemic," by illuminating the spectrum of narcissism, identifying ways to control the trait, and explaining how too little of it may be a bad thing.

"What is narcissism?" is one of the fastest rising searches on Google, and articles on the topic routinely go viral. Yet, the word "narcissist" seems to mean something different every time it's uttered. People hurl the word as insult at anyone who offends them. It's become so ubiquitous, in fact, that it's lost any clear meaning. The only certainty these days is that it's bad to be a narcissist—really bad—inspiring the same kind of roiling queasiness we feel when we hear the words sexist or racist. That's especially troubling news for millennials, the people born after 1980, who've been branded the "most narcissistic generation ever."

In Rethinking Narcissism readers will learn that there's far more to narcissism than its reductive invective would imply. The truth is that we all fall on a spectrum somewhere between utter selflessness on the one side, and arrogance and grandiosity on the other. A healthy middle exhibits a strong sense of self. On the far end lies sociopathy. Malkin deconstructs healthy from unhealthy narcissism and offers clear, step-by-step guidance on how to promote healthy narcissism in our partners, our children, and ourselves.

Excellent Read with Practical Advice (If You Like Brene Brown, You'll Probably Like This, Too)
By Ohio K
Absolutely practical and completely accessible. After having purchased and read a multitude of books on narcissism, all I can say is that I wish I had found this one first.

This book offers a variety of scenarios in which we all are apt to find ourselves at one point or another - real-life circumstances that are challenging to negotiate, whether you are dealing with "healthy self-esteem gone astray" at either end of the spectrum and whether the aberration is in yourself, a parent, child, co-worker, friend, mate or romantic prospect.

Many other writers offer little hope for those taking the frightful steps of opening up to vulnerability and moving away from the growth-stunting ends of the self-esteem scale (or for those who are supporting them), but this one offers strategies for avoiding shutdown and opening up communication; at worst, it teaches how to take the temperature in assessing the chances for nurturing growth.

Compassion says that no one chooses to be a narcissist any more than one chooses to fall on the co-dependent end of the spectrum, but sometimes life circumstances breed these traits as survival mechanisms for a time. The point is, anyone can get stuck given the right circumstance (in my view), so here is an opportunity to get the lever out and mindfully approach ourselves, those we love or those we must otherwise manage to circumnavigate.

Also, while some other books get heavily into the psychology of development vis-a-vis narcissism (and I've enjoyed a couple of those as well), in my experience they tend to be harder to follow and, perhaps, offer far less practical or hopeful advice.

If I may compliment them both with the comparison, I'd liken Dr. Malkin's book on narcissism to Brené Brown's wonderful TED talks on vulnerability. If one resonates with you, I wouldn't be surprised if the other did.

Great content, great organization
By golden_rule
I'm not sure I can add much to Ohio_K's review, though I'll include this observation for anybody considering the book who has a tendency to over-think everything: this book has a near (if not) perfect balance of (a) content and (b) references to more specialized or technical (e.g., peer reviewed journals) resources. I deeply appreciate that in addition to its high-quality message, the presentation makes it so much easier for me to manage tackling what can be very stubborn and complex topics.

Not much about pathological narcissim
By Farmhouse Lady
I expected something different from this book. It presents a scale of narcissism and why the traits are good for us, in moderation, and discusses and gives good examples. I got that the author was trying to show that all narcissism is not BAD, only when it goes to one extreme or the other does it become pathological. Perhaps I was after the wrong thing, which was dealing with pathological narcissism and the effects on their victims. The studies he cites to support his conclusions are small, although larger ones may not exist. He does do a good job of showing that the narcissistic "epidemic" is a misnomer. However, most people are not concerned with a normal, healthy level of narcissism. More discussion in dealing with the problematic, pathological ends of his scale and the ways victims (and those who have those issues) could deal with the problems would have been helpful.

It's hard understanding all the writings, but that's to be expected I suppose
By Jon
I rented this book from Amazon for a required philosophy class at Utah Valley University. I'm just lucky that my teacher is able to explain the concepts very well because I have a really hard time understanding most of the principles from this book! Hopefully you get as lucky as I was to find a good teacher. If you go to UVU, it's professor Atkinson.

What kind of a self respecting author(s) just slap together a textbook without any kind of glossary whatsoever?? What if you need to look up some obscure term you read 3 months ago, but you've forgotten what exact page the term was on? I'll tell you what I've had to do- Google EVERYTHING.

I wouldn't recommend this half-baked textbook to anybody.

Highly Useful Guide!!
By Dr. Johnson C. Philip
Writing a Curriculum Vitae is both a science (statement of facts) as well as an art (presentation of facts). Unfortunately, many applicants are blissfully unaware of the presentation aspect and they thing that just presenting a sequence of data about themselves would suffice. Nothing could be farther from truth.

So many applicants compete with each other, and interviewers have so little time to sift and sort applications, that he who presents well will get noticed. This book is an excerpt from two books, one on CV and the other on Interviews. Most people would need only this eBook to guide them.

The book presents the subject accurately and forcefully, exactly the way a CV needs to be presented. It would help everyone who needs to write a CV.

I very highly recommend this guide!

I would say this book might work well for an individual who is just starting out writing cover letters and hasn't learned any techniques. Otherwise I feel this book is too general. After taking a class on the subject and doing online research there was just nothing new here.

Love Is the Wine: Talks of a Sufi Master in America, by Al Jerrahi Al Halveti, Sheikh Muzaffer Ozak

This book presents an intoxicating mix of essays to satisfy the spiritual thirst of those with long experience in Islam, as well as those encountering Sufism and the meaning of spiritual love for the first time. Themes including generosity, faith, self-knowledge, patience and love are developed with stories and teachings by Turkish Sufi master Sheikh Muzaffer Ozak. A mesmerising storyteller, master teacher, and prolific author in his native country, he was ideally suited to bring the richness of the Sufi tradition to the West. The chapters of this book, skilfully edited and compiled by the psychologist and Sufi teacher Dr Robert Frager, were derived from talks given during Sheikh Muzafffer's visits to New York and California over the last years of his life. Sheikh Muzaffer Ozak understood Westerners as almost no Sufi master before him has. His religious bookshop in Istanbul attracted hundreds of Western seekers visiting Turkey. In his travels, he initiated hundreds of Americans and Europeans into the Halveti Jerrahi Order, interpreted their dreams, and answered their questions about everything from theology and mysticism to marriage and earning a living. These stories and teachings are memorable, yet highly enigmatic, and meant to be told and retold. Like great spiritual parables, the themes are universal and their applications ageless. The astute reader will appreciate new levels of meaning in these profound teaching tales with each reading. "Love is the Wine" is a treasury filled with priceless items of Sufi wisdom.

Empire's End: Aftermath (Star Wars) (Star Wars: The Aftermath Trilogy), by Chuck Wendig

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Following Star Wars: Aftermath and Star Wars: Life Debt, Chuck Wendig delivers the exhilarating conclusion to the New York Times bestselling trilogy set in the years between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

EVERY END IS A NEW BEGINNING.

As the final showdown between the New Republic and the Empire draws near, all eyes turn to a once-isolated planet: Jakku.

The Battle of Endor shattered the Empire, scattering its remaining forces across the galaxy. But the months following the Rebellion’s victory have not been easy. The fledgling New Republic has suffered a devastating attack from the Imperial remnant, forcing the new democracy to escalate its hunt for the hidden enemy.

For her role in the deadly ambush, Grand Admiral Rae Sloane is the most wanted Imperial war criminal—and one-time rebel pilot Norra Wexley, back in service at Leia’s urgent request, is leading the hunt. But more than just loyalty to the New Republic drives Norra forward: Her husband was turned into a murderous pawn in Sloane’s assassination plot, and now she wants vengeance as much as justice.

Sloane, too, is on a furious quest: pursuing the treacherous Gallius Rax to the barren planet Jakku. As the true mastermind behind the Empire’s devastating attack, Rax has led the Empire to its defining moment. The cunning strategist has gathered the powerful remnants of the Empire’s war machine, preparing to execute the late Emperor Palpatine’s final plan. As the Imperial fleet orbits Jakku, an armada of Republic fighters closes in to finish what began at Endor. Norra and her crew soar into the heart of an apocalyptic clash that will leave land and sky alike scorched. And the future of the galaxy will finally be decided.

A Trilogy Declining in Quality as Fast as the Empire Did(or Clear Example of why not to Rush a Writer)
By Amazon Customer
The series started off good with showing slices of every day life across the galaxy, solid set ups for the galaxy after Endor, and most of the characters were interesting except the main Wexley family, but their faults weren't too monumental till the book's ending that set up Norra's death only to immediately remove the stakes for the rest of the series by bringing her back only few pages later.

The second book got much much worse by not only expanding on the least interesting characters(Wexleys), giving the more interesting characters drastic unsubtle character changes(it's not a character arc if it's jagged and comes from nowhere), and above all else failing to capture the voice of the Orige Trige characters that were forced into the story in an attempt to, as the intro said, make our "hearts go a-fluttery".

This third one has all of these problems except that he did focus more an the best character in the story villain, turned disavowed, turned angle of vengeance(like I said drastic character changes) Grand Admiral Sloan. He even did an okay job of rapping up the story lines (no matter how small) across the galaxy, but none of this is forgivable when considering the writing of the this book and the series. It is very obvious that this series was rushed in order to fill the void of the collapse of the Old EU. As the books go on the writing gets worse and often having characters "thinking" description of the situation instead of describing what's happening. Setting a book in the most first-person-point-of-view writer can set a story in(the character's thoughts) is perfectly fine in any story that is of the mind, but this was an action affair concerning a galaxy at war. What's worse is that information in these thoughts often repeated what we already knew about the story and characters, and not in a way that even approached being helpful to understand the scene we were currently in.

So in summation:

Main characters were boring and petty

Interesting characters were malleable and inconsistent

Failed to capture the feelings, actions, and voice of the Original Characters

Writing was repetitive and derivative(because of rushed books)

And the stakes were terribly low because the characters got out of deadly situations on the regular without thought to being consistent with the universe written or the set up.

If you want to read a good Star Wars "War" book, read Alexander Reed's Battle Front Twilight Company.

Best of the Aftermath trilogy, but alas unfulfilled potential
By Seth Nelson
Aftermath: Empire's End is probably the best of the Aftermath trilogy. Here are the things I liked about the book:
- Mechanisms of the Contingency: I thought the backstory regarding the Contingency and Palpatine's "blessing" of Gallius Rax to be interesting, and quite nicely explains why the First Order is seemingly the Empire 2.0.
- Rae Sloane: This character continues to be fascinating, and I am glad that Wendig plucked her from A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller. She provides an intriguing perspective, in that the Empire is not faultless for her but overall did good for the galaxy. Her arc has been a good one, from insider to outsider back to insider.
- Battle of Jakku: We finally got to read about the full battle, and the character Agate got good characterization and had a good moment.
- Unknown Regions: More mystery! We know Thrawn is from the Unknown Regions, so it will be fun to see where that goes.
- Justice vs. Revenge: I really liked that this thread followed Norra throughout the book.
Critiques:
- I would have loved to see some Lost Stars integration. Since we know Cienna and Thane were present at Jakku, and the Star Destroyer Inflictor is seen in The Force Awakens, I wish that would have been referenced to bring those stories together.
- The only romance in the book is between Sinjir and Conder, but it feels forced and overdone. There's very little reason for the relationship beyond that it should exist. The same actions would have occurred had they been comrades or the like, so it was not compelling.
- Overall, the story was predictable: Honestly, I wish the first two books (Aftermath and Life Debt) had been condensed into one, Empire's End would then be book two, and a third book would explore the Aftermath of a galaxy without an Empire and more answers to the First Order's beginnings. Wendig keeps the mystery alive, but provides some lackluster answers to other puzzles.

Epic fail!
By Star Wars Fan
I’ll start this off by saying that this is NOT a Star Wars novel. Yes, it has Star Wars on the cover and takes place in a galaxy far, far away, but it lacks the heart, excitement, enjoyment, and message that many fans, including myself, have grown to love over the last 40 years. Some of this comes from the lack of key characters that are instrumental to the Star Wars universe, as well as the poor writing style of the author. However, there is one thing that cannot be ignored in this book, which makes this story an epic fail.

The story ends up being a proclamation...dare I say a manifesto...of the author’s alt-left, radical, liberal views and his downright intolerance of any idea that’s different or more middle of the road than what his distorted beliefs represent. He has taken a great opportunity establish the new canon post ROTJ and has completely wasted it (not once, but three times) across the 3 book series.

I firmly believe that over its 40 year history, Star Wars has been one thing that has been able to bring people together. No matter who a person is or where they came from, Star Wars tells a story of hope, sacrifice, struggle and the ability for good to conquer evil. It’s not about conservatives vs liberals, democrats vs republicans, or right vs left - which is what makes it enjoyable to all people no matter what their background. This author completely misses that point and turns this book into something very one-sided, and dare I say, tarnishes a part of what makes Star Wars loved and cherished by many of its fans. Clearly he has an agenda and he uses every opportunity to push his views on to the reader.

It’s very disappointing that the Lucasfilm story group and Disney let this slide through and did nothing to reign in the author. Reading the other more recent Star Wars books that were published, there is much less, if any, of this political and social rhetoric found in those stories. As of the day of this review, I looked on Amazon to see how the reviews of other recent Star Wars novels compare to those of the Aftermath series. The numbers speak for themselves:

5/14/17
Aftermath (Book 1) 5 stars - 18% 1 star - 34%
Aftermath Life Debt 5 stars - 38% 1 star - 15%
Aftermath Empire End 5 stars - 29% 1 star - 17%

Thrawn 5 stars - 76% 1 star - 1%
Ahsoka 5 stars - 64% 1 star - 1%
Catalyst 5 stars - 49% 1 star - 4%
Bloodline 5 stars - 59% 1 star - 2%
Lords of the Sith 5 stars - 46% 1 star - 3%
Battlefront:Twilight 5 stars - 54% 1 star - 1%
Tarkin 5 stars - 46% 1 star - 3%
Dark Disciple 5 stars - 63% 1 star - 2%
A New Dawn 5 stars - 42% 1 star - 4%

Granted this is an unscientific comparison and the numbers will change over time, but a rough estimate is that approximately 50% of readers will give a Star Wars book the full 5 stars and less than 5% will give it 1 star. The Aftermath series doesn’t come close to that in any way. At best, a little over 1/3 give it 5 stars and at least 15% will give it 1 star. In my VERY humble opinion, that is a failure.

The lessons from this: the writer can make or break a good idea. Give the fans an escape that will be enjoyable for all. And most of all, please leave the alt-left AND alt-right views to another form of media and keep it out of Star Wars. I hope the next 3 book series is better than this one.
