A Wealth of Knowledge on Arrhytymias

My purchase of this book was the 1st time I decided to strictly buy an e-book for my personal reference purposes. I wanted to be able to anytime, anywhere access an arrhythmia resource - regardless of whether I had my big screen desktop in front of me in the comfort of my home - or my ipad or even the small screen of my iphone. I decided on this book because of the world renowned reputation of one of its authors (Douglas Zipes) who I was well aware of for the many years I've had interest in this field. This e-book is not for the beginner - but for one with at the least good foundations and strong interest in arrhythmias (who does NOT have to be an expert!) - up to the true expert level. This is a LOT of wisdom in this book - and scores of wonderful arrhythmia figures and colorful diagrams/tables. The text is informative (albeit not always easy to correlate to the figures) - but legends for each figure are excellent. My main constructive feedback regards finding what you are looking for. The Contents on the 1st page is merely chapter headings (rather than including subheadings) - and the Index is sooo long (18% of the the book!) - that although all topics are in the Index - it becomes time consuming to find a specific topic if you are looking for one (I somehow don't find any convenient Search in the menu of this e-book ... ). BOTTOM LINE: There is a WEALTH of wonderful information in this book for the novice-up-to-expert interpreter written by two ECG Gurus with an enticing variety of tracings - but it is at times a challenge to find what you are looking for ... If that could be remedied, this would become a book among the best.

This is for cardiology level reading and is written for physicians who have good knowledge of ECGs. Describes complex arrhythmias in simple terms. Huge collection of 12 lead ECGs to demonstrate every possible arrhythmia. Worth buying just for the ECG collection

errors

My first search for a specific topic within this book revealed no fewer than a half-dozen errors in a single chapter (AV blocks), primarily in the captions. One caption referred to an ECG which wasn't even present....instead they had duplicated another ECG by mistake. This was obviously poorly edited and reviewed by the authors. There's lots of potential here and plenty of high-quality images, and I'm hoping that if there's a second edition, they scrutinize this edition and correct the numerous mistakes.

Definitely Useful as a Coach

This book is a wonderful refresher on Parliamentary Debate though I hesitate as to how effective it would be for a novice in the event. As a coach of over 4 years now in parli, with prior experience in policy debate, this book helped give me an excellent starting point when coaching my new novices; however, this is certainly not a book I would simply hand over to one of my novices to have them decipher. Although, I have to admit, I'm not sure decipher is the right word.

This book is straightforward in its language and very accessible but I think the accessibility of the language reduces the book to an altogether simplistic discussion of parliamentary debate which, for a book, leaves the reader a bit wanting for more. For example, the author commits two, sparse, pages to flowing-- a crucial concept for maintaining proper organization in debate. Or, another example, in discussing the substance of a capitalism K the author simply writes:

"Any plan that uses a capitalist system endorses capitalism. Capitalism is bad, they make it stronger, and here are a bunch of reasons why cap is bad."

While K's are not typical in Parli, at the present moment, this simple explanation was a bit too much of an overview.

I will, however, grant that the author's stated goal is to "provide[] an overview of debate, specific outlines for debate formats, and extremely clear and easy to understand explanations of how to debate." In this regard the author is absolutely successful. I just wanted, and hoped for, more. It's the perfect book for a coach or a more advanced debater, I think it may actually be a little too simple for a fresh novice debater.

EDIT: Afterthought-- the internal format of the text as a little confusing at times. It needs better titles and internal signposts to distinguish each section from the other...

Outstanding Parliamentary Debate Text

This is a very thorough review of nearly all of the key aspects involved with parliamentary debate. The text is best suited for beginning debaters, but also includes important sections that even the most seasoned debaters would find useful. Importantly, the text moves beyond debate to consider key concepts in argumentation (e.g. common fallacies). The text is most at home in a debate, or argumentation class, but also would be a helpful supplement for any professor/teacher who wants to incorporate debate in their courses regardless of the subject. The text is not bogged down with heavy citations, so it is light on its feet and fairly easy to digest, and it incorporates a healthy breadth of topics. The best part is (for those of us concerned with the ever increasing price of textbooks), it is the most reasonably priced textbook that I have used it years. Overall, a highly recommended text!

The Basics

This is a good quick reference book for west coast style parliamentary debate. I used it my entire first year of collegiate debate and it was thin enough to fit in my laptop case with my computer. At times, I wished it was a little more explanatory, and if you are not familiar with jargon more common to policy debate you will be a little bit lost at first. Start here and then get your coach to explain the things you don't understand.

Cees W. de Jong is a designer and publisher based in Naarden, the Netherlands. He has published numerous books on design, architecture, art and graphic design, and is now working as a design/publishing consultant and author.

Alston W. Purvis is professor of the visual arts division of the School of Arts at Boston University, USA. He is also the author on many books on graphic design.

Jan Tholenaar was a collector of the printed letter in all its various incarnations; especially in the form of design catalogs and specimen books. He lived in Amsterdam, where he passed away in 2009.

A Visual (Pictorial) Reference only

If you're a typography aficionado, this is a wonderful set to add to your collection. The publisher is Taschen and there is a good showcase of modern typographic specimens by German foundries in the 2nd vol.

*Please note that the 2 volumes cover western typography from 1628-1938 only. You would have to get other works to cover contemporary typographic designs and developments. Again, this set serve as a visual reference with rare, vintage samples rather than an academic tome with in depth scholarly essays and criticisms. For typographic history and nuances about typography, I still find myself using The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst.

*CAUTION* Book isn't really hardcover!

This book is an incredible resource, and absolutely worth investing in. I wish I knew before ordering, this specific version is two softcover books that are wrapped in a semi-hard sleeve. I plan to keep these as a treasure in my library, and would have spent more on the proper hardcover had I known. Otherwise, I 100% recommend this set.

A book finally leaves his mind to probe his life

This book is very well researched and presents a very accurate account of his life from begining to end. It is an escape from the many books on his theory's and his mind. This book focuses on his life, and what made him a wonderful human. It will bring Einstein into your life as a great person entirely apart from his scientific discoveries. However, please be aware the book does not present his theories or studies in detail. But that wasn't the author's intentions, and he did exactly what he set out to do and did it beautifully.

Happy Birthday, Albert Einstein

People who know nothing about Einstein's ideas, nonetheless have ideas about Einstein -- his life, habits, subjects he flunked, and so on. The principal benefit of Mr. Brian's text is its ability to convey a dispassionate objective rendering of Einstein, organized almost as a yearly diary, with each chapter covering a set number of years in the life of this great scientist. It is, as other revewers have noted, a remarkably readable book. One doesn't look here, however, for the scientific contribution -- this is, as the title says, A Life. Einstein's life, though, for all his tendency and capacity for concentrating like a laser on whatever problem he worked, was very much a social life. He made friends quickly, surrounded himself with students quite often, had more than his share of challenges with the many women in his life, and was deeply affected by the wave of anti-semitism that characterized so much of his most productive years. Portrayed in these pages, in other words, is a profoundly human Einstein. In many respects, quite the ordinary man with extrordinary intellectual capacities. Nominated 8 times in 11 years for the Nobel Prize, he was denied the prize, partly because of the anti-semitism of one of the Committee's members, and partly because, well, the Committee was not sure they understood what he was saying. That itself, is an indication of his vision. So, March 14, the year his birth -- Happy Birthday Albert!

In-Depth Biography with Brilliant Range of Content.

A few years ago my Father gifted me a Barnes and Noble gift card for my birthday, and this is one of the books I purchased. There has always been something very endearing to me about Einstein, aside from his intellectualism and contribution to the world. After reading some very brief articles about certain aspects of his personal life, I took a keen interest in learning more about the man behind the fantastically giant brain.

Einstein: A Life is an in-depth biography touching on many subjects: from early childhood and familial dynamics, to the social and political issues of the time (and further their impact on Einstein's location, and education), influences and role models, antagonists, love interests (of which there seemed many), personal traits and characteristics (quite a quirky man, he was), professional/career-related feats and failures, interpersonal relationships (incredibly interesting to learn of his interactions with many other well-known individuals ranging from entertainers to high-profile politicians and educators), and many, many more.

I absolutely loved reading some of the very funny stories (one describing how, in the absence of a scarf, decided to yank the runner off of the couch to don during his outing in the cold weather, ha), but was also surprised to learn of some of the darker content (his relationship with Mileva, for instance).

This man had such a beautiful mind; beyond the typical things most people are aware of. His passion to prevent nuclear war, and his sense of responsibility to personally urge against it. His ability to see people as people regardless of their origins, shape, color, disability-and the contradiction therein of being very tight-lipped regarding his affections with those in frequent direct contact.

The entire book introduces so many facets of him-it is a must-read. My only regret is the dire need to know his final words!!!

Fantastically fantastic!!

This is one of Shakespeare's most enigmatic and complex plays and is an overall great read!! This resists categorization as either a comedy and instead is considered to be a romance, having been written towards the end of Shakespeare's life. It's as fantastical as "The Tempest," as bitter as "King Lear" and as gratifying as "Much Ado About Nothing" all at once. It includes the usual Shakespearian staples of kings and cuckoldry but also includes some unexpected elements such as an oracle from Apollo, the appearance of Time as a character and even a bear chase!! I don't want to spoil anyone's fun by revealing any of the essential plot details but, suffice it say, you will not be disappointed- it is a truly enthralling read!!

A Redemptive Tragedy

The Winter's Tale is a lot of things: heart-breaking, exhilerating, funny, beautiful, romantic, profound, etc. Yeah, it's all here. This is one of the bard's best plays, and I can't believe they don't teach this in schools. Of course, the ones they teach are excellent, but I can see high school kids enjoying this one a lot more than some of those others (Othello, King Lear).
The story is, of course, brilliant. King Leontes goes into a jealous rage at the beginning against his wife Hermione. Leontes is very mistaken in his actions, and the result is tragic. Shakespeare picks the story back up sixteen years later with the children, and the story works to a really, really surprising end of bittersweet redemption.
This is one of Shakespeare's bests. The first half is a penetrating and devestating, but the second half shows a capacity for salvation from the depths of despair. Also, this being Shakespeare, the blank verse is gorgeous and the characters are well drawn, and the ending is a surprise unparalleled in the rest of his plays. The Winter's Tale is a truly profound and entertaining read.

It adopts insights and methodologies from criminology and forensic psychology to provide a holistic analysis of the behavioural underpinnings of lone-actor terrorism.

By focusing upon the behavioural aspects of each offender and by analysing a variety of case studies, including Anders Breivik, Ted Kaczynski, Timothy McVeigh and David Copeland, this work marks a pointed departure from previous research in the field. It seeks to answer the following key questions:

• Is there a lone-actor terrorist profile and how do they differ?
• What behaviours did the lone-actor terrorist engage in prior to his/her attack and is there a common behavioural trajectory into lone-actor terrorism?
• How ‘lone’ do lone-actor terrorists tend to be?

Overdue empirical study of the phenomenon.

After all of the well-publicized lone actor terrorist attacks over the past few years, a volume that culls through the data and provides empirical analysis that considers all of the various aspects, drivers, and factors surrounding these attacks was overdue. That said, while this book provides no real solutions to this phenomenon (and it would be suspect if it did), it does provide a sober overview that considers all of the recent research in the field. Valuable for terrorism researchers, academics, government officials, and 'CVE' professionals.
