Good introductory book

The book is well structured and have many interesting examples. The book is a good start point for anyone who wants to start learning Modelica. The price is in my opinion a little bit expensive since the book is based on Modelica 1.6 language specification and the latest spec is 2.2 with some relevant changes.

Hands-on experience with Modelica

One of the weakest points of the new object-oriented modelling language Modelica was the lack of an introduction to help engineers and scientists understand the differences to other modelling concepts. Using many examples from the automotive industry, electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering this book explains the concept of physical modelling, i. e. using basic laws to describe physical systems, and shows how to formulate these principles in Modelica. The Modelica language is presented in a series of examples that gradually grow more complex. The companion CD contains the complete source code of the examples and a working version of the commercial tool Dymola. The reader can thus start with the given examples and modify them to get some practise with the tool and the language.
The emphasis of the presentation is on the engineering task of building a model, for more theoretical questions references are given.
I like this book because of it's hands-on approach. It gives a comprehensive introduction to physical modeling and the new language Modelica and I can recommend it to engineers and scientists who have to create or use models of physical systems.

could be better!

the book tries to be structured and explain the things but it fails at some points. the explanations are not satisfactory at some points. there are many ambiguous things in the given examples, in the provided codes. for example, "protected" keyword is used in the given initial examples but its meaning is explained a few sections later. in a similar way, the details are explained mainly in the "language fundamentals" section at the end of each chapter. this is not normal because a reader expects explanations immediately, not in the middle or at the end of chapter.
however, in spite of these negative points, the book is very readable and it is perfectly structured to understand modelica.
this book will not be enough to learn and implement modelica in an expert level.
it will just give an introduction. in any language book, first the syntax is given. however, in this book syntax is introduced through examples, which is not professional and correct.
my most critical critisism is the ambiguity at some points in this book. for example, in section 7.5.4.8, the author gives x:=abs(y) as an example and then talks about the integration but the example does not include any integration. possibly, he has something else in his mind to associate with this example.
there are many such cases where it is a big challenge to understand what the author is talking about.
as a result, although the book is well structured it does not deserve more than 3 stars due to non-professinal explanations.

The Book of North Carolina Barbecue

This book covers the bases of North Carolina Barbecue. It discusses the history of North Carolina Barbecue, how to cook pork shoulders and whole hogs, gives recipes for famous Eastern and Piedmont barbecue sauces and various side dishes and desserts, and has interviews with the foremost North Carolina barbecue restaurant owners who cook in the traditional style. The book is fun, interesting, and informative. Highly recommended.

Part cookbook part history book. Love it!

This is a very interesting and educational book. It explains the various styles of North Carolina Barbeque, and the history behind them. Many of the old school Barbeque joints around the state are hi-lighted and described and recipies and instructions are mixed in as well. I collect Barbeque books, and this is one of my favorites.

I like to learn the origins of how something came to be. This book definitely gives you that, and explains the intra state rivalry that has existed here in NC for as long as I remember even in my own family. My father was from the mountains, and his brother was a coastal guy. They'd argue at every cookout about what good Carolina BBQ really was, and I never really got it until I read this book.

Good historical references, and some good recipes for 'Real Carolina BBQ"! What's not to love about this book.

Garry Kasparov, the current champion, dethroned him and the two ideologically opposed Russians have had a bitter rivalry ever since. Anatoly Karpov is also the winner of the largest number of tournaments in the history of the chess, with more than 160 due tournaments. He is considered the best positional player of history of chess and is the author of several other books on chess theory.

Good book BUT...

This is a great book. This is not a repertory book but a reference book. I found every variation I was interested to learn. I would say that this book is for people +1900 and for seasoned Caro Kann players. This is not a good book for starting to play the Caro.

There is something I did not like about this book... it is very hard to follow the variations. You have to be patient to find your way thru pages and lots of variations and sub variations.

If you already play the Caro, you are +1900 and have a lot of time to follow thru hundreds of variations then this is the book for you.

If you want to learn to play the Caro and want to learn the structure and plans look somewhere else.

For decades, A. Karpov has been the world leading expert and supporter (both in theoretical discusion and practical results) of this very solid defence. This book is focused in the sharp advance and gambit lines (ECO B10-B12) and accomplishes the task of pointing out the best continuations and ideas for both sides in a wonderful way. Either you like to defend the resourceful positions arising from this defence or to crack it, this book will help you to choose the best way to do it. The variations follow a prelation order helping the reader to identify them from bad or dubious to recommended ones.

Overall, an excellent book which surpasses the good old work from V. Kotronias on the same subject.

Advance Variation and Gambit System

I just recieved this book in the mail and wanted to throw out a quick review of the publishing job and some of the content. I really think this is how an opening book should be made. Very easy to read and follow, multiple indices, an average of about 2 diagrams per page for 260 pages. The prose is conversational and direct. This book looks to be an excellent resourse for both black and white players who want to enter these variations. About 230 of the 260 pages cover the Advance system. I eagerly await the next volume, and I don't even currently use the C-K defense. This looks to be one of the best opening books I've seen. Very clean, professional. Buy it if you are at all interested in the Caro-Kann.

speedy black bean burgers
MAKES 6 TO 8 PATTIES | $0.53 TO $0.71 PER SERVING

The Quinoa & Mushroom Burgers in my first book have been a big hit with my readers, but they are a bit time-consuming to prepare, so this burger recipe is my speedy alternative! It’s loaded with fiber and protein from black beans and lots of flavorful veggies, to truly earn the name of a “veggie” burger. I prefer the texture of these burgers when they are pan-fried, but I bake them more often because you can finish cooking the whole batch in less than 30 minutes. Feel free to double this recipe and freeze the extras for a quick and easy weeknight meal.

1-1/2 cups cooked black beans (see page 78) or 1 (15-ounce) can, rinsed and drained
1 cup gluten-free rolled oats
1. teaspoons fine sea salt
1 carrot, chopped
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 red bell pepper, diced
1/4 red onion, diced
1/2 cup loosely packed fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped
Coconut oil, for frying (optional)
6 to 8 high-quality buns or butter lettuce leaves
Your favorite toppings such as arugula, avocado, and red onion


1 Preheat the oven to 350°F (if you plan to bake them) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2 In the bowl of a large food processor fitted with an “S” blade, combine the beans, oats, salt, carrot, cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, bell pepper, onion, and parsley and process until a uniform mixture that sticks together is
created. The mix shouldn’t be supersmooth and may even resemble the texture of ground beef.

3 Use a 1 ⁄3-cup measure to scoop the burger mixture and use your hands to press into patties about . inch thick, making 6 to 8 evenly sized patties. Arrange in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.

4 To bake: Bake for 15 minutes, then gently flip with a spatula and bake for 10 minutes more. The patties are done when the outside is dry and crisp, but the inside is still tender. 

5 To pan-fry: Heat a small amount of coconut oil in a cast-iron skillet over medium heat and place a patty in the center of the pan. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, until the spatula easily slides under a crisp side, then flip and cook the other side for another 4 to 5 minutes. Repeat with the remaining patties, greasing the pan as needed to prevent sticking.

6 Serve warm with toppings on a bun or in a lettuce wrap. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week, or in the freezer for up to 6 months. (Be sure to place parchment paper between each patty to prevent sticking.) To reheat, simply heat the burgers in a skillet on both sides until the centers are warm.

but I would say this one is my favorite of the two

Megan's books are the only things I've bought on Amazon that I've felt compelled to review (and I've purchased a lot over the years!). I was a recipe tester for both books - aka I helped Megan test recipes for both books pre-publication. So I've already tried many of the recipes in both books. Both books are staples in my kitchen, but I would say this one is my favorite of the two.

This book includes more "Comfort foods" and "traditional entrees" (although her other book has tons of meals that are meant to be eaten at dinner!). Really both books are definitely fantastic purchases, and I recommend owning both of them. If you're new to healthy eating, and only want to buy one book initially, maybe go for this one first because the comfort foods category. It might accelerate the healthy eating acclamation process.

My favorite recipes (so far) are:
Breakfast: Frosty Chocolate hake, Freezer Oat Waffles, Orange-Mango Creamsicle Smoothie
Soups: Mexican Quinoa Stew
Snacks: Cashew Queso
Comfort Foods: Sloppy Joe-Stuffed Sweet Potatoes, Philly Cheesesteak-stuffed Spaghetti Squash, Butternut Mac 'n' Cheese, Vegan Shepherd's Pie

I was most skeptical about the Mac 'n' Cheese because of the butternut squash base, but it was one of my favorite dishes. If you go into it expecting to try new things, instead of trying to exactly replicate indulgent dishes, you'll likely love the results. Highly recommended!

Amazing! Lost 40lbs with Megan's Recipes

What an amazing 2nd book! I lost 40lbs following Megan's advice and blog 6years ago to get ready for pictures in my sisters wedding, and it completely changed my life! I've easily kept 30+ lbs off over the years all thanks to her basic principles. So happy with the timing of this book as it's just in time for me to use the new recipes to trim down and get ready for my own wedding!

Truly, No Excuse

I loved the book "Everyday Detox" and have used recipes from that book every single week. This new book is aptly titled "No Excuses Detox" because Megan Gilmore has taken great pains to remove any excuses to eating whole foods, properly balanced in nutrition. The recipes look tasty and easy to follow even for a novice in the kitchen. I follow a group weight loss program that tracks points and prefer to use my points for real whole food. My FAVORITE feature of "No Excuse Detox" is that there are six pages that list what I need to know- calories, fat, carbs, sugar and protein- so I can just plunk in those numbers to get a points value. Truly, no excuse!!

He then gives us a chronological survey of naval operations in the Middle Sea and associated waters, from Lepanto (1571) through Lissa (1866), interleaved with short discussions on the evolution of technology and tactics, diplomatic, political, and strategic developments, and so forth. The campaigns and actions range from small ship-to-ship duels right up to major battles and sieges, and include the numerous European and American efforts to supress the Barbary Pirates.

"Refreshingly, Blackmore really does look at all the participants in Mediterranean naval warfare, so we hear of operations by the Maltese, Neapolitans, Dutch, Venetians, Russians, Turks, and more, not just the English, French, and Spanish."

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "The Great American Novel". Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which provided the setting for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, he worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his singular lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In 1865, his humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", was published, based on a story he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention, and was even translated into classic Greek. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Though Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he invested in ventures that lost a great deal of money, notably the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter, which failed because of its complexity and imprecision. In the wake of these financial setbacks, he filed for protection from his creditors via bankruptcy, and with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers eventually overcame his financial troubles. Twain chose to pay all his pre-bankruptcy creditors in full, though he had no legal responsibility to do so. Twain was born shortly after a visit by Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it", too. He died the day after the comet returned. He was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age", and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature". Twain began his career writing light, humorous verse, but evolved into a chronicler of the vanities, hypocrisies and murderous acts of mankind. At mid-career, with Huckleberry Finn, he combined rich humor, sturdy narrative and social criticism. Twain was a master at rendering colloquial speech and helped to create and popularize a distinctive American literature built on American themes and language. Many of Twain's works have been suppressed at times for various reasons. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been repeatedly restricted in American high schools, not least for its frequent use of the word "nigger", which was in common usage in the pre-Civil War period in which the novel was set.
