Reall good and more than just a romance

I have to admit that this isn't the time of book I would normally pick up. I also don't know how it compares to other Erotica titles considering that I don't read very much erotica. I found the sex scenes to be far better than what appears in the Anita Blake series and more on par with Jacqueline Carey's historical fantasy, just without the bondage bit.

I was very surprised by this book, I must admit. It wasn't at all which I thought it would be (some weird beastial sex mash up thing. I actually was cringing when I "brought it. But I thought, it's free so no risk). The story, however, is a nice retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story, admitting with a few sex scenes between people who actually love each other.

What I really like is the fact that Nicole Dreadful really knows her tale. If you have read the various French versions, you will see them reflected here, as well as hints of McKinley and Disney. Dreadful updates the tale - the family is close and the sister not evil - but she also deals with what critics believe the original tale to be about. The theory is that the original story was about finding happiness or lessening fear on behalf of the women who were facing arranged marriages. That it is, in part, leaving one family and joining another, of losing fear of sex. This idea of the fear of sex is what Dreadful focuses on and what makes this short story rise above the all too common romance retellings. What Dreadful explores is coming to terms not all with sexuality in general, but your own. I got this for free, but for intended to buy the next in the series. Very good.

Bad....

This pales in comparison to any other rendition I have read thus far (excluding the version I just rated for those following my progress).

The characters are flat, the sex isn't all it's cracked up to be, and the plot was practically butchered.

The story plot mostly runs parallel to Robin McKinley's "Beauty" for the first 70%, though with a few changes here and there. Time flew quickly, so one chapter lasts around a week, and then the time flies by months a time, next thing you know, it's been a year.

There was no incentive for Beauty to come back when she leaves the first time, but she does and starts picturing the Beast kissing her?

In the opening, you find out Beauty is an illegitimate child born of a mistress, but that fact is ignored the rest of the novel.

It didn't hold together, is what I'm saying....

I like the fairy tale version of Beauty and the Beast, so I downloaded this to get a different spin. Since I found it in the romance section, I figured it would be an erotic spin, but it didn't quite make it there. If you're going to put an adult spin on a timeless story, it seems to me the characters of that story need to act like adults. The whole time I was reading it, I felt as if Beauty was a small child, though an age was never given. And I can't figure out why the whole Elliot thing was even written. I guess it was just confusing for me more than anything else.

A great book on the foundations of astrology and its connection with natural phenomena

This book covers the basics of astrology very well and describes astrology's connection to nature. Another highlight of the book is connecting a person's birth chart to what their facial expression should look like. I have never seen an astrology book that did this. I highly recommend this book.

Get this book

I consider myself an intermediate student on the age old study of the stars. This book is very fun to read and even if you have never read about astrology, I believe after reading this book you will have at least have a little itch to continue learning about this ancient craft. I bought this book together with William Schrieb's other book Personalities of the Zodiac, which is fun as well, but I found this book to go more in depth about the details of the zodiac. I would also like to mention that I was pleasantly surprised to receive my two books with a personal handwritten note from the author, along with his autograph on both copies, and a crisp $5 bill thanking me for buying both copies together! A small gesture to some, but for me shows a sincere appreciation from an actual person who knows the value of their own work. This book would be an awesome coffee table book, or gift to that person we all know who seems to have everything. A curious teenager, perhaps? I encourage all to read this fun and enlightening piece!

The best way to understand very confusing and deep fields like Astrology, is to find ways to see it working in the world around us, and in our own minds and bodies.There are photos and descriptions of many celebrities, their signs and comparisons of their features. Also, along with providing a great insight into how the zodiac influences our physical makeups and personalities, a comprehensive overview is given of astrology in general. Such as meanings of the houses, the elements and qualities associated with each planet and constellation, and how it operates in cycles. I found the author through studying the Holy Science, and from recommendations by Santos Bonacci in his older presentations. The book itself is easy to read, short enough to not be overwhelming, and presented in a way that even a beginner could enjoy it. I was also pleased that the author signed the inside cover for me,

A lot of stories!

I'm a big fan of boxed sets, as I can grab a bunch of stories by a bunch of authors and get a bunch to read. Sounds kind of simple, but I think it's a lot of fun!

Anyways! This boxed set is great for those sorts of guilty pleasure moments. It's got the stories that you might have always been curious to read, but maybe they aren't exactly polite to discuss in proper public company. That's fine, though! Don't worry about it, just read them, no discussion necessary =P

There really is a great collection of stories here from some wonderful authors, though. I've enjoyed a lot of Cheri Verset's stories in the past, and I've read a few from some of the other authors, too. They do a really good job of giving you what you like, but in a different way which really pulls you into it.

This is a great collection and if you're looking for something risque in large quantities, you can't go wrong.

Unique, smart, well written, thought provoking, excellent!

This book totally surprised me. there are basically two story lines running side by side. one explores a new civilization as it develops literally from the ground up. that while the other story line provides a perspective on a developed society which turns inward and barbaric. both in the same time frame, same extra-solar planetary system. the science, tech, anthropology and sociological aspects are so exceedingly well integrated into the work, just wow!

i have been an avid reader of science fiction my entire life. a gift my father passed on down to me. it is exceedingly rare for me to come across a book that is so unique in both the subject matter and how it portrays the 'big picture.' anyone who enjoys smart thought provoking science fiction will absolutely be thrilled by this book.

I am very fond of this book, very fond, indeed

Loved this book. I struggled a bit at the beginning, but once I got into it I became very fond of the characters. It was a terrific conceit, an accidental evolution - best laid plans and all - and the unfolding was well thought out. Kinda reminded me of Vernor Vinge. I kept thinking about it for days afterwards and hope that he follows up with a sequel. I am usually not partial to sequels, but I would be in this case because I want to follow them on their journey. Oh, the ending was brilliant. I kept wondering how he was going to wrap it up, feared for the worst I did, but damn, it was very satisfying.

This is a fascinatingly different view on society, intelligence and evolution with great technology integration: advanced, but foreseeable, realistic. And with regards to the societal side of things (on both sides of the species divide - I won't say more so I don't spoil anything!), the author has done a great job interpreting "is", "could be" and "will likely be". It's almost like a McGyver-themed Greek tragedy, where the observer can see the climax inexorably approaching and (most of) the character(s) oblivious to what is happening to them - and both are powerless to do anything about it. (Although some try valiantly!) That being said, the story is full of unexpected twists and turns (starting right away with the premise) that keep it lively and suspenseful. An epic (covering thousands of years, but also jumping very often, which sometimes leaves you guessing for a few pages, regarding what has happened...) tale of social and species evolution. Great reading.

All language texts are not created equally. They tend to fall roughly into one of two categories: 1) lightweight quasi-phrasebooks that make liberal use of phonetic spellings and sweep grammar under the rug; 2) bone-dry reviews of the mechanics of a language, peppered with the occasional vocabulary for memorization.
How rare it is to find a book that preserves the flavor of a language while laying it forth in an eminently practical manner; such is the present volume. New words, conjugations and formulae are introduced in the context of short readings and quotations, often humorous, from Voltaire, La Rochefoucauld and many others.
The authors have made ingenious use of cognates, words recognizable by their English counterparts, to tap an instant vocabulary. It's gratifying to discover how much French you already know as an English speaker. This approach gives you the opportunity to put that knowledge to work immediately, and to build upon it -- not without effort, but without the drudgery that you might expect from such rigorous fare. The preference for real French text (as opposed to textbook cookery -- "See Pierre run. Run, Pierre, run!") ensures that material is covered in a natural and useful order.
Although it provides simple guidelines for pronunciation, the book's focus is (as the title suggests) on the language as written. For conversational skills and comprehension of the spoken language, aspiring francophones should supplement this book with tapes and CDs (such as the "Living Language" series) and/or videos (e.g. "French in Action").

Average while effective !

French for Reading Knowledge, 1997 edition, a second edition is in fact
the re-printing of the 1952 edtion by Aleetha Palmeri in memory of her father and his colleague E.E. Milligan, the co-author.

The book " is meant to reach that large number of students, college freshmen or graduates, who would like to acquire a reading knpwledge of French in the minimum
amount of time."

The Outstanding feature of the text resides in the fact that
" the reading matter includes a LARGE NUMBER OF QUOTATIONS from a
great variety of Authors and Scientists. " The student gets to read
excerpts from Voltaire, Camille Flammarion an astronomer, Montesquieu
a political theorist, Leon Binet a famous doctor , and other illustrious
French writers in all fields of knowledge.

The weakness is that the exercises do NOT provide the correct answers and so
a student is left to his own device to figure out the answers.

The text is expensive to get ; having read the text of a competitor
I would definitely recommend to purchase instead the following :French for Reading by Karl Sandberg as it provides the same features
while offering the answers to exercises and considerably more systematic
in approach with more exercises.

Worked for me...

I bought this book in the hopes that I would be able to use it to pass my graduate language examination. I worked with the book for about five months, I made it about half way through the book, I took the test, and I passed quite easily. So the book definitely works. The book is clear and there are a ton of translation exercises at the end of each chapter so you get a lot of practice translating passages as you make your way through.

There are a couple of things I did not like about the book. The translation examples given at the end of each chapter were sometimes frustrating. There were two things that made them frustrating at times.

First, sometimes the sentences, when translated literally into English, did not make a lot of sense. It was sometimes quite difficult to make sense out of them. In some ways that is a good thing since it gives the reader practice translating which is the whole point of a book like this. I think the practice I got translating those difficult passages, trying to figure out how to make sense of them and translate them into intelligible English, was quite helpful when I took my test. It was still quite frustrating at times, however, especially since there are no translations in the book, so the reader is often not entirely sure whether they are actually translating the sentence correctly. I wish that the move to more difficult translations had been more gradual so that the reader had a little more time to build up their confidence. I would recommend the reader use Google translate to check their translations. It is not perfect, sometimes google's translations are clearly way off, and sometimes the sentence they come up with makes no sense in English, but most of the time it is a good way to check your work and make sure you are translating correctly.

The second thing I found frustrating is that the authors put a lot of words in the translation exercises that were not covered in the book. A lot of times they would present a verb that you had never seen before, and it would be conjugated, and you would have to figure out what the original verb was by comparing it to other verbs that conjugated in a similar way. I will say, again, that this was good practice for taking a language test. It is necessary, when translating, to be able to figure out verbs you do not already know from their conjugations. It was, however, still quite frustrating at times. I wish, again, that they had been more gradual in their approach. I found myself losing confidence because I felt like I was being given some translation exercises that I was having a very hard time translating fairly early on in the book. Although, who knows, perhaps if it had been more gradual I would not have passed my test. All I know is that I definitely found myself getting frustrated, and losing confidence, at times. Perhaps that is unavoidable.

All in all, I feel quite comfortable recommending this book. It worked for me, and I have a feeling it would work for others as well. It is not perfect, in my opinion, but perfection is probably an unrealistic ideal. I would also recommend Easy French Reader as a helpful companion volume to this work. The more practice you have translating the better you will do when you take your language test.

Rethinking College Student Retention

Student departure can be a challenge for any institution. About the Author

John M. Braxton is professor of education in the Higher Education Leadership and Policy Program in the Department of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University. He is the editor of the Journal of College Student Development and a past president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE).

William R. Doyle is associate professor of higher education and coordinator of the Higher Education Leadership Program at Vanderbilt University.

Harold V. Hartley III is senior vice president of the Council of Independent Colleges. His responsibilities includes oversight of CIC's research and assessment and vocation initiatives.

Amy S. Hirschy is assistant professor at the University of Louisville with a joint appointment in the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology, Counseling, and College Student Personnel and the Department of Educational Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education.
