Exhilerating!
By Michael T
I greatly enjoyed this book, I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed the first book, even though it had errors, the story was just what I'd been looking for in a novel, so I was more than pleased. I didn't really notice any errors in this installement. I'm sure many who've read the first book is wondering about that. This book is a lot better as far as the editing. The writing was fresh and well paced. I had no idea what to expect in this second novel. I'm a huge fan of the earlier Laurell K. Hamilton books and was looking for a new author to keep me entertained in this genre, I'd recommend D.N. Simmons to anyone in the same boat.

What I liked most about this story is that even though it was told from Natasha's point of view, the story focused on so many other characters. In this book you get to learn a lot of John, the sexy manager at Desires Unleashed, Xavier, and Elise. New characters are introduced and they are filled to the brim with personality! Devin has got to be one of my all time favorite characters. I think the real heros of this book are Xavier and Sergio. Natasha's inner monologues are funny and insightful, it's through her curiosity that you learn more about the others.

I think this is a credit to D.N. Simmons's writing style. It's not at much sex in this book as in Desires Unleashed, but the sex scenes that you do have are extremely steamy and shocking. This book focused more on action and that was right up my alley.

It had just the right amount of humor, gore, eroticism and action to make a winning combination.

I am definitely looking forward to the third installment and this is really a keeper!

I was expecting nothing less than perfect
By Togana
D.N. Simmons delivers yet again, another well thought-out plot with the perfect mixture of horror, action, suspense, sex and romance. This book follows up with several characters from Desires Unleashed. Natasha's best friend is missing and Darian, who is one of the hottest, toughest and sexiest vampire master to EVER grace this genre is arrested for murder because some pretty bad guys wanted him out of the way so that they could do their dirt. Natasha along with Xavier, Elise , Sergio, John and Devin go on a mission to clear Darian of murder charges before 7 days are up.

I'm an extremely picky reader, I don't like half-stepping. I don't like when sex replaces plot in a novel. I don't like half-baked characters that are boring as all hell to read or "Mary Sues." and I don't like unrealistic dialogue or plot scenarios. I see far too many books that have taken this road and it is extremely refreshing to come across an Author like D.N. Simmons who when you read her novels, you see the amount of effort she put into bringing the story and characters to life and at the same time is able to suck you into her world where you don't want to leave. Anne Rice had this same effect on me too.

Someone else mentioned this, and I'm going to concur. The Guilty Innocent; Knights of the Darkness Chronicles book two was a credit to D.N.'s writing style. I've read many books, mainly by LKH where the story is told through the eyes on one person and everything seems to react only to that one person or they exist only for that one person to be larger than life.

That is not the case with Natasha. D.N. uses Natasha's "eyes" to introduce the reader to the other characters, to see deeper into who they are and why they do what they do. I have a better understanding of the characters now. So much was revealed in this book and you learn so much more about both vampires and shapeshifters.

As always, D.N. delivers some of the hottest and erotic bite and sex scenes ever with great detail. This book was extremely hard to put down and the only reason I did was because I didn't want it to end and that was when I had one more chapter to go.

D.N. is an author I would highly suggest checking out, especially if you're looking for something out of the ordinary. I have no doubt in my mind that The Royal Flush isn't going to be anything less than spectacular!

Review
"If only Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls were my bible 25 years ago, it would have surely saved me years of hating my body. This book is a must read for girls and women of all ages and sizes. I believe this book has to power to change the trajectory of self-loathing for countless females. Bless you, Jes Baker."
—Ricki Lake

"The first thing readers of this stirring manifesto will notice is that Baker, a blogger and mental health specialist, is very funny. She is also on a mission. As Baker explains, she wants to help women embrace a body-positive view that doesn’t put other people down for their size, color, or self-presentation. The book builds on Baker’s viral Attractive and Fat campaign, which called out Abercrombie & Fitch for fat shaming. Baker recommends websites, blogs, books, and hotlines for anyone—of any gender—who’s intent on living without self-loathing despite the social pressures around body image. Her message is powerful, particularly her suggestions of things 'fat people' should insist on doing that others often tell them they can’t (e.g., sitting in a booth, riding a bike, wearing a bikini). Equally strong are the essays from guest authors, including 'Body Love and Disabilities: Intersections of Identity' by Shanna Katz Kattari and 'The Case for Male Fatshion' by Bruce Sturgell. Readers will be challenged and empowered by Baker’s ideas, inspired by her quest to promote body positivity, and entertained by her candid, witty storytelling."
—Publishers Weekly

“Thank you, Jes Baker. Thank you from my daughter. Thank you from me . . . . Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls is a cultural game changer.”
—Brittany Gibbons, Bestselling Author of Fat Girl Walking

“Fierce. Funny. Factual....Tackles our most deeply held beliefs about our bodies with razor sharp wit and an unapologetic commitment that we all deserve to love these vessels we live in. Bravo for this piece of body liberation!”
—Sonya Renee Taylor, Founder and Radical Executive Officer of The Body is Not an Apology

"Baker has done it all: A fierce, funny, and rocking manifesto that applies solid science to challenge common body myths, exposes cultural health hypocrisies, and stays true to the politics of social justice. Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls will inspire you to find and flaunt your own brand of awesome."
—Linda Bacon, PhD author of HAES and Body Respect

Great Body Acceptance Book
By Renee Lake
This is a great body positive body love book. It's funny and really hits home. I seriously thought, "wow, I'm not the only one who thinks like that?" More than once. Her chapter on mental health is above and beyond good. Best line "Happy people don't try to purposely hurt other people." This book is also all inclusive, gay, straight, black white and inbetween.

This book is for everyone not just fat girls!
By Amazon Customer
This book is for everyone not just fat girls! It's for anyone who has ever felt self-conscious or doubted themselves.

I was hooked from the first page! Loved this book so much I purchased two more copies as gifts! Wonderfully written and a strong message.

I randomly discovered this book in a video for JC Penny. Jes exclaims "here's my book" and for a split second it showed the cover. I replayed and paused the video until I could see the title - and I am sure glad I did!

Not just for heavy girls..
By Melissa Smith
I used to be overweight but have lost the weight and kept it off the last 5 years. I couldn't shake the "inner fat girl" as I like to refer to her. Basically no longer being physically overweight but very mentally and emotionally overweight. I'm positive 99.9% of women can relate to this book, overweight or not. Ditch your insecurities and live boldly is what I took away from this book and I suggest anyone struggling with any sort of self esteem issues read it.

Review
David Zahl writes like a true believer in the healing power of music, and one with a deep understanding that, at its most sublime, what music wants the most is to mimic God's voice. Each chapter of *A Mess of Help: From the Crucified Soul of Rock N' Roll* reads like one side of a lengthy discussion with an old friend... who might be even more obsessed with your favorite band than you are! His passion for the subject is infectious. Highly recommended! -John Davis, musician and songwriter (Superdrag, The Lees of Memory)

David Zahl is the director of Mockingbird Ministries, editor-in-chief of The Mockingbird Blog, and a recovering music critic. He and his wife Cate live with their two sons in Charlottesville, VA, where David also serves on the staff of Christ Episcopal Church.

I cannot recommend it enough
By Lance D. McClure
First, I am not a music guy. I am a book guy. However, this book's depth and profundity drew me into the world of rock and roll leaving me wanting more. I have a new respect for the music, the artists, and the world of popular culture surrounding it. Only a well versed expert can write such a wide ranging book about such a subjective topic. This book should be recognized by Rolling Stone and it's author asked to be a regular contributor. If you happen to be a music/rock and roll fan this book should be on your shelf. If you are not, the psychological and theological themes will give you a very interesting read. The writing is clear and lucid without sacrificing depth or complexity. David Zahl should be a go to source for all who have an interest in rock music and the artists who create it. I cannot recommend it enough.

Come, All Ye Heavy-Laden of Rock Coffee Table Books
By Caroline Henley
Most books on music are fluffy, in terms of both the actual facts and the spiritual side of music. Dave Zahl knows no fluff--this guy is one of the funniest music nerds possible. Which makes A Mess of Help such a solid addition to rock lit! As thoughtful as Carl Wilson's (no, not that one) 33 1/3 book on Celine Dion, but with better music, and more revelations. When's the sequel? We need thoughts on Pulp, the Libertines, the Mountain Goats...

If you like Tim Keller, read David Zahl
By Joshua Sherman
I came across this book while looking for a Tim Keller book on the subject of prayer. When I saw the author's distinctive last name (Zahl) it reminded me that I had heard Zahl speak at a conference in New York City. So, I bought the book not knowing what to expect but was very impressed and look forward to future publications from Zahl. As you find out quickly in the book, Zahl is a music buff with a talent for dissecting how the music from the icons of pop culture was shaped by theology, outlook on life and faith. I appreciated how Zahl thoughtfully pointed to the big questions that individual artists and bands were asking about life through their music.

Good section on Fin Stmt modeling
By DJ
The section on financial stmmt modeling and projections (pro forma) is one of the best out there. It is only a slice of what the book offers but if you are an equity analyst and asked to build models, I would buy this book based on the section it has on forecasting. It is not the end all be all, but a solid effort to supplement your other modeling books.........

Ok, but a bit simplistic
By FB
The book is correct for very novice student, but no more. It spends a lot of time explaining very basic facts and ideas (eg. the author justifies at length why learning a programming language, but does not discuss any other language apart from VBA). There are many examples, but they are often mere variations of each others.

Cryptographic Boolean Functions and Applications, by Thomas W. Cusick, Pantelimon Stanica

Boolean functions are the building blocks of symmetric cryptographic systems. Symmetrical cryptographic algorithms are fundamental tools in the design of all types of digital security systems (i.e. communications, financial and e-commerce).

Cryptographic Boolean Functions and Applications is a concise reference that shows how Boolean functions are used in cryptography. Currently, practitioners who need to apply Boolean functions in the design of cryptographic algorithms and protocols need to patch together needed information from a variety of resources (books, journal articles and other sources). This book compiles the key essential information in one easy to use, step-by-step reference.

Beginning with the basics of the necessary theory the book goes on to examine more technical topics, some of which are at the frontier of current research.

Excellent introduction to cryptographic Boolean functionse
By MSF
An excellent introduction to cryptographic Boolean functions. The book is
well-written for the student and provides a number of interesting references for researchers.

However, there is substantial gulf between bent functions, propagation criteria and cryptographic primitives used in practice. In the next edition, I would like to see more coverage of NIST approved primitives in terms of the propagation criteria. For example, what can one say about SHA-512 on the subdomain of
{0, 1}^{512} ---> {0, 1}
where the output is kth bit -- 0 < k < 513
-- of the SHA-512 hash. Another example is for a random 128-bit key, what is the degree k of the propagation criteria PC(k) of the component Boolean functions that compose AES-128. How close is k to 128?

How much does PC(k) increase as the number of rounds increases?

What about uniformity as the key ranges over {0, 1}^{128}?

What is the maximum reached? We know that for AES-128 that a fixed key implies this AES-128 Boolean function is
at most in PC(128) but no analysis is even provided that it is even in PC(1).

These are important practical questions that are not considered in this book.

Underground: The Tokyo Gas Attack and the Japanese Psyche, by Haruki Murakami

In this haunting work of journalistic investigation, Haruki Murakami tells the story of the horrific terrorist attack on Japanese soil that shook the entire world.

On a clear spring day in 1995, five members of a religious cult unleashed poison gas on the Tokyo subway system. In attempt to discover why, Haruki Murakmi talks to the people who lived through the catastrophe, and in so doing lays bare the Japanese psyche. As he discerns the fundamental issues that led to the attack, Murakami paints a clear vision of an event that could occur anytime, anywhere.

From Publishers Weekly
On March 20, 1995, followers of the religious cult Aum Shinrikyo unleashed lethal sarin gas into cars of the Tokyo subway system. Many died, many more were injured. This is acclaimed Japanese novelist Murakami's (The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, etc.) nonfiction account of this episode. It is riveting. What he mostly does here, however, is listen to and record, in separate sections, the words of both victims, people who "just happened to be gassed on the way to work," and attackers. The victims are ordinary people bankers, businessmen, office workers, subway workers who reflect upon what happened to them, how they reacted at the time and how they have lived since. Some continue to suffer great physical disabilities, nearly all still suffer great psychic trauma. There is a Rashomon-like quality to some of the tales, as victims recount the same episodes in slightly different variations. Cumulatively, their tales fascinate, as small details weave together to create a complex narrative. The attackers are of less interest, for what they say is often similar, and most remain, or at least do not regret having been, members of Aum. As with the work of Studs Terkel, which Murakami acknowledges is a model for this present work, the author's voice, outside of a few prefatory comments, is seldom heard. He offers no grand explanation, no existential answer to what happened, and the book is better for it. This is, then, a compelling tale of how capriciously and easily tragedy can destroy the ordinary, and how we try to make sense of it all. (May 1)Forecast: Publication coincides with the release of a new novel by Murakami (Sputnik Sweetheart, Forecasts, Mar. 19), and several national magazines, including Newsweek and GQ, will be featuring this fine writer. This attention should help Murakami's growing literary reputation.

From Library Journal
The deadly Tokyo subway poison gas attack, perpetrated by members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult on March 20, 1995, was the fulfillment of every urban straphanger's nightmare. Through interviews with several dozen survivors and former members of Aum, novelist Murakami (The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) presents an utterly compelling work of reportage that lays bare the soul of contemporary Japan in all its contradictions. The sarin attack exposed Tokyo authorities' total lack of preparation to cope with such fiendish urban terrorism. More interesting, however, is the variety of reactions among the survivors, a cross-section of Japanese citizens. Their individual voices remind us of the great diversity within what is too often viewed from afar as a homogeneous society. What binds most of them is their curious lack of anger at Aum. Chilling, too, is the realization that so many Aum members were intelligent, well-educated persons who tried to fill voids in their lives by following Shoko Asahara, a mad guru who promised salvation through total subordination to his will. For all public and academic libraries. Steven I. Levine, Univ. of Montana, Missoula

From Booklist
After living abroad for eight years, novelist Murakami returned to Japan intent on gaining a deeper understanding of his homeland, a mission that took on an unexpected urgency in the aftermath of the Tokyo poison-gas attack in March 1995. Inspired by a letter to the editor from a woman whose husband survived the subway attack but suffered terrible aftereffects, Murakami set out to interview as many survivors as he could find who were capable of overcoming the Japanese reluctance to complain or criticize. With great sensitivity, insight, and respect, Murakami coaxed a remarkable group of people into describing their harrowing experiences aboard the five morning rush-hour trains on which members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult released deadly sarin gas. Unlike a journalist, Murakami doesn't force these searing narratives into tidy equations of cause and effect, good and evil, but rather allows contradictions and ambiguity to stand, thus presenting unadorned the shocking truth of the diabolical and brutal manner in which ordinary lives were derailed or destroyed. The most haunting aspect of these accounts is the eerie passivity of the passengers both during and after the assault, a phenomena echoed in Murakami's courageous interviews with Aum members, frank conversations that reveal the depth of these individuals' spiritual longings and the horror of their betrayal at the hands of their corrupt and insane leader. Shaped by his fascination with alternative worlds and humanity's capacity for both compassion and abomination, Murakami's masterful and empathic chronicle vividly articulates the lessons that should be learned from this tragic foray into chaos. Fascinating Modern History and Look into the Mind of Murakami
By queenhobart
I read this because I love Murakami. I had never heard of the Tokyo gas attacks, and now am frankly pretty surprised it had never come up in the US.

Anyhow, Murakami mostly stays out of his subjects' ways in the first portion of the book. He lets survivors speak for themselves and neither he nor the translator make many intrusions, unless it's to clarify some detail (usually the translator notes are for people like me who don't have any background knowledge about the attacks).

It's really interesting to see how people viewed the same situation differently--there are several times when one survivor will describe a person that later tells their own story of the event, and both are pretty different. Despite this being a really cool perspective, it can get a tiny bit repetitive, but it's worth it to stick it out and finish the book.

The last section of the book is Murakami's reflections on what the gas attacks meant in the broader context of Japanese society and interviews with ex and current Aum members. During this, he waxes philosophical about his own complex relationship with his home country. As a western fan who has never visited Japan I found this fascinating. It's easy to pick up on themes feeling isolated or like something is wrong in your society (or the way you relate to it) in his other books, but it was very interesting to see him speak directly about these thoughts.

He's more intrustive in the Aum section, which I actually appreciate--his anger at the naive beleifs that led to so many deaths is palpable, and most of his interviewees don't shrink back from it.

Overall, a really good read if you're interested in Japan, terrorism, cults or just Haruki Murakami.

Worth reading and contemplating
By Prossion
First of all, considering who the author is, I should note that interest in Murakami's (wondrous) novels is not going to necessarily going to equal interest in this book. While some of the persistent themes of Murakami's novels are present - alienation, yearning, etc. - this book is less about Murakami and more about Japanese post-war society. In analyzing the Aum and Shoko Asahara phenomenon (particularly the March 20 1995 Sarin gas attacks), Murakami hopes to delve deeper into the underlying circumstances.

Part 1 of the book - the titular "Underground" - consists of Murakami's interviews with approximately 40 victims/survivors (as one self-described survivor notes in one of the interviews, victimization is a self-defeating subject). These interviews tend to last anywhere between two and five pages, and admittedly, they can be a little monotonous. But I think that's the point. Some have complained about how "boring" it is, but each of those interviewed add a little more substance to the reader's conception of the Japanese psyche. I myself was fascinated with every single one of them. Although many of them had similar things to say, each perspective was in one way or another unique...call it individuality in multiplicity, or unity in individuality, whatever.

However, out of all of the interviews, some in particular stick out - both for the reader and for Murakami as well. One of these regards the death of Eiji Wada, an outgoing husband who unfortunately passed away months before the birth of his daughter, Asuka. Murakami interviews not only the late Eiji's wife, but his mother and father. He thus paints a sorrowful picture of a man who lived a kind, wonderful life, before having it senselessly torn away by something as simple as a poke of an umbrella. Even more poignant was the lamentable fate of "Shizuko Akashi" (a pseudonym was used to avoid the media), who became a vegetable as a result of the sarin. Although she is (was) undergoing extensive therapy to regain her faculties of speech and memory, such a tragedy imprints itself on the mind of the reader.

After a section in which Murakami discusses his own perspective on the events, he launches into a series of interviews - less numerous but more extensive (with more editorializing) than those affected by the sarin - with members of Aum (this second part is called "The Place That Was Promised"). Some of these members had left; others remained in the organization. The last 100 pages of the book thus attempt to paint the other side of the picture - to truly see if the Aum novitiates were as sinister and foreign as the media believed them to be.

But I think the truly important message of the book - one that Murakami touches on occasionally - is that one cannot understand the senseless tragedy that occurred on that day without attempting to understand the perspectives of all involved. The survivors of the attacks are not extraordinary people who have expert opinions - they simply espoused their own beliefs. They just happened to pick the short straws in the jaw, and were thus affected in the train. Many of them noted that they wouldn't have even normally been on the train that day if not for it being the end of the fiscal year, or because of a sudden meeting, or because they were early/late getting out the door, etc.

But because of the distinct ordinariness of those affected, the interviews with the Aum initiates complete the picture. The initiates, it is shown, were not fanatical, militaristic, or really at all violent; they simply felt spiritually impoverished, or foreign to their own land. That's a feeling most of us can sympathize with. More importantly, it's a feeling that many of the survivors mention at one point or another - but fleetingly. The survivors, who we can assume are more at home in society than the initiates, are able to change their jobs, to take time off, to forget themselves in the twilit respite between obligations. Those who fled to Aum were, in large measure, those who could not - who fled into self-absorption and solipsism in search of a rigid, permanent purity.

If we subtract the Buddhist esoterica and other elements peculiar to Japan, it's easy to see that this sort of phenomenon is by no means unique. It is the result of marginalization, and if marginalization is tolerated, or if it is spurred on with a lack of understanding, it reacts and in turn grows. In the end, Aum Shinrikyo, rather than embodying the religious tenets that it based itself around, fell into the old pattern of revolutionary conservatism. Such a thing is happening, in smaller or larger examples, around the world - with or without the religious patina. One of my favorite authors, Herman Hesse, struggled with this similar issue - maintaining one's spiritual dignity without subsuming yourself to the tyranny of the majority. That question, in my opinion, is really the undercurrent of this book.

After "The Place We Were Promised" ends, in an Afterword (Murakami's perspective on the trials and crisis as a whole, the impetus for which was Ikuo Hayashi's - one of the assailants - memoir), Murakami notes that we shouldn't be so staunchly critical of the Aum terrorists because of the fact that their malaise is the result of a social condition that we share. This is perhaps true. I know that I myself could certainly see myself in a similar situation had my life taken a slightly different turn. For that reason, I think it is an important book.

Wonderful read, but don't expect to find Murakami's lighter

Harrowing. Wonderful read, but don't expect to find Murakami's lighter, more surreal style. The subject matter is treated with the respect and gravitas it deserves.

A moving and revealing exploration of Hasidic life, and one man's struggles with faith, family, and community

Shulem Deen was raised to believe that questions are dangerous. As a member of the Skverers, one of the most insular Hasidic sects in the US, he knows little about the outside world--only that it is to be shunned. His marriage at eighteen is arranged and several children soon follow. Deen's first transgression--turning on the radio--is small, but his curiosity leads him to the library, and later the Internet. Soon he begins a feverish inquiry into the tenets of his religious beliefs, until, several years later, his faith unravels entirely.

Now a heretic, he fears being discovered and ostracized from the only world he knows. His relationship with his family at stake, he is forced into a life of deception, and begins a long struggle to hold on to those he loves most: his five children. In All Who Go Do Not Return, Deen bravely traces his harrowing loss of faith, while offering an illuminating look at a highly secretive world.

“Astonishing. . . . Deen's harrowing story . . . is also an indictment of those who are standing by and allowing it to be.” ―The Washington Post

“With this book Deen has laid to rest the idea that a Hasid from New Square could never become a great writer in English, or an articulate chronicler of his own experiences.” ―The New Republic

“All Who Go Do Not Return is an extraordinary memoir. The writing is beautiful. The journey it chronicles is poignant, relatable-and also unlike anything most readers will ever have experienced. . . . His voice is an important one in our generation.” ―ZEEK

“A heartbreaking read as Deen fights to reconcile his identity and love for his family with his loss of faith in God. But it is also one of great courage and hope as Deen aspires to live openly and without fear for the first time.” ―Publishers Weekly

“In this moving book, Deen lays bare his difficult, muddled wrestling with his faith, the challenges it posed to everything he thought he knew about himself, and the hard-won redemption he eventually found.” ―Library Journal

“A clash of cultures made fascinating and personal.” ―Booklist

“I understand that even if I did visit New Square I would have no greater access to Hasidic life than my occasional walk through Williamsburg, where I can see but can't penetrate its appeal, or its secrets. Deen's memoir, however, does grant me that access. It is the book's ticket to mass appeal as well as the seat of his disquiet in its writing.Though he writes because he has a story to tell, Deen's work, especially in his memoir, is clearly crafted to benefit others dealing with a wavering faith.” ―Tablet Magazine

“Shulem Deen has a fascinating story to tell, and he tells it with exquisite sensitivity. All Who Go Do Not Return gives us not only an insider's glimpse into a shrouded world few outsiders get to see, but also a movingly told narrative of one man's struggle toward intellectual integrity. The setting may be the world of Hasidic Judaism, but the drama and the insights are universal.” ―Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, 36 Arguments for the Existence of God: A Work of Fiction

“All Who Go Do Not Return is a deeply honest and moving story about a man's decision to do something both so simple and so radical - to live in accordance with his own beliefs. Shulem Deen has written an enormously powerful and important memoir about faith, doubt and freedom.” ―Tova Mirvis

“On the eve of his marriage, at eighteen, Shulem Deen knew how to slaughter an ox in Jerusalem's ancient temple, but he knew less than most seven-year-olds do about sex and movies and technology and literature--about the world that lay only miles away from him. Among the Skver Hasids, all who go do not return, but in writing this memoir, Deen has returned, and brought us, his lucky readers, with him. This is a heartbreaking book, and an important one, about the consequences of being true to yourself, and about a world and a community few of us know.” ―Joshua Henkin

Round peg in a Skverer hole
By Jojoleb
[SPOILER ALERT: I found it difficult to write this review without discussing some of the major aspects and events of the book. I don't think that these are exactly spoilers: we know from the jacket cover and picture of the now clean-shaven author that he ends up leaving a Chassidic sect and the book opens with the author and his family getting ousted from the New Square community. I refer to most specific events in general terms but, even so, I just wanted to give readers the heads up.]

Shulem Deen's All Who Go Do Not Return is the author's memoir of leaving an Orthodox Chassidic sect. I was riveted from start to finish. This is a powerfully written book that is even more gripping because it is not fiction. Moreover, it has intrinsic interest because it opens the door to the inner sanctum of the insular, Skverer Chassidic community located in New Square, New York.

However, I found the book equally intriguing as it was disturbing to me. I am not Hasidic, but I am an observant Jew. Although I hate labels, Deen would probably peg me as 'Modern Orthodox.' (For those who are not in the know, this moniker cuts a large swath, describing anyone from the most liberal Jewish Orthodoxy--just to the right of Conservative--to a graduate of Yeshiva University's rabbinical school. If this is the range, I would definitely fall right of center.)

As such, I am familiar with Hasidim and Hasidic communities. I have not lived in such a community nor am I drawn to do so. But just as I am able to appreciate the authenticity of Deen's point of view, I also have a great respect for and know many Hasidim who are, indeed, pious and live rewarding and productive lives within communities that are similar to New Square.

Nevertheless, that does not mean that everyone who is born within a Hasidic enclave will fit in. For most of us that live in the United States, we tend to think of communities like New Square as quaint, anachronistic, recreations of the Eastern European shtetl. A sort of Fiddler-on-the-Roof, Anatevka experience, where the citizens live beatific, humble, dedicated lives and perhaps break out into song in full colorful costume when the moment strikes them.

Of course, we know that this is not true. Any community, no matter how religious, how small, or how insular, is rooted in the real world. Hasidim who live in places like New Square, the Amish, the Hutterites, and other similar types of communities have their joys but also have their strife. They have their celebrations but they also have their own internal politics.

Those who live this life may seem constrained to us, but having strict guidelines in life may give them a sense of purpose or godliness that we may lack with all of our freedoms. As we see with Deen's account, however, there is little wiggle room and those who do not fit in are destined suffer a life of repression or need to leave.

The author's break from the Skverer community began with disillusionment. Starting off as an ardent adherent, Deen starts to question his insular world when he reaches the age of 19, and there is undue social pressure for him to get married. At first he cannot understand why he needs to get married at such a young age. Deen doesn't feel ready to get married and also quibbles with the way his bride is selected. As is the tradition, he gets married after meeting the bride only once.

Once married and after having a number of children, the world starts to crack around him. Deen finds it more and more difficult to keep his family financially afloat and finds the Skverer community lacking in terms of support.

Deen had somehow felt that as he reached each expected step of his rabbinic education, things would all just work out. Instead he finds a world of debt, food stamps, community food vouchers, and not even being able to live check to check. In desperation, he resorts to moonlighting as an elementary school teacher and a tutor, jobs where it is expected to falsify documents so that he will get a paycheck cut by the government. He even makes a vain attempt to start a business.

Deen finds the Skverer Rebbe to be a distant figure who doesn't care about his followers and doesn't take Deen's plight seriously. Deen starts thinking about New Square as a kind of pyramid scheme, with Deen suffering at the very bottom while the Rebbe (and the Rebbe's cadre) benefiting enormously at the top.

As he tries to hold his family together, Deen finds himself in search of something outside the pale. He buys a computer for work, cracking open the door to the outside after he discovers chat rooms of the internet. He buys a car for a job and finds himself enjoying the forbidden radio and driving outside of New Square, exploring a vast new world. He finds a friend who has partially 'escaped' who gets him hooked on movies. The pull of the outside world exceeds the ties that bind him to Skver and Deen loses his faith in the Skverer community and his faith in God.

Deen describes his remarkable emergence from the Skverer community as one would describe time travel. This is not an exaggeration. Although Deen is becoming a Talmudic scholar, he has poor command of the English language (his first language is Yiddish), he has maybe a fifth grade secular education, and he has never watched TV or seen a movie. He has had glimpses of the outside world, but has lived within the Hasidic community and is unacquainted with modern American social conventions and culture.

Deen's 1800s, Eastern European persona is not ready for the 20th Century. And his exploration of the outside world and subsequent loss of faith separate Deen from his family and his community. All this happens more quickly than Deen expects and in ways that he is not fully prepared for. Deen's wife, Gitty, makes a valiant attempt to stay loyal to her husband but she is too moored in the Skverer community to embrace a larger world. Both try to keep the family unit intact, but it is apparent even from the beginning that this is doomed.

Deen is unprepared for the greater world practically, educationally, and emotionally. This basic lack of knowledge and social tools is an invisible barrier that he has to overcome before he can leave New Square. The fallout of losing his family scars him. Deen is deeply wounded by the hydraulic, social pressure from the Skverer community on his children to separate themselves from him and is blind-sided by the legal machinations of the Skverer community that physically alienate Deen from his family.

Deen has a knack for being simultaneously heartbreaking and humorous. The account of his wedding night, where as a student he was learned in the Jewish laws of intimacy but completely ignorant of the actual physics of the act, is a perfect example of this. His writing is engaging and he is an excellent story teller. His goal is simply to tell his story the way he sees it, and he mostly succeeds.

Of course, if Deen's ex-wife was writing the book, the narrative might have been completely different. But it is the veracity of Deen's narrative that rings throughout. Deen is always conscious that he is telling his version of the truth. Because of this, he makes his best effort to tell the unvarnished story, even if this means highlighting his personal failures.

Nevertheless, even though Deen takes great pains to describe his experience in a distanced, journalistic way, he is unable to completely do so. Memoirs, of course, are always written from the point of view of the author and this one is no exception. The wounds are still too raw, and even Deen knows that he cannot be completely objective.

This is, perhaps, the greatest strength of the book and the thing that makes it stand out from the crowd in what appears to be a new genre of non-fiction describing an authors 'escape' from ultra-orthodoxy. Books by Deborah Feldman and Leah Vincent, for example, describe similar trials and tribulations. Deen's circumstances, however, are less outrageous and more relatable. Some have questioned the truth of some of the claims in Feldman's book and Vincent actually came from a far less insular brand of Orthodoxy than Deen. Moreover, the other books are chock full of bitterness--an emotion that is understandably present but that does not dominate Deen's memoir.

The danger of Deen's book, I suppose, is that some may see it as demonization of Hasidism, Judaism, or religion in general. Those who have a drum to beat on these issues will use the book as a way to reinforce their negative stereotypes of Hasidism and by extension Orthodox Judaism. Moreover, there are those in the Jewish community who will see Deen's book as just another in a series that shamefully disparages Orthodox Jewish practice to a wider audience.

Deen instinctively tries to steer away from this, but, even as he strives to be even handed, he still can't help taking a few pot shots. For example, he is repeatedly dismissive of what he considers the triviality of Talmud study--for example having in depth knowledge of just exactly how to write a legally binding contract in 5th century Babylonia. The Talmud does contain instruction and arguments regarding very minute points of Jewish law. However, the purpose of Talmud study, and the reason the arguments therein were written down for posterity, was not only to elucidate the specifics of Jewish law but to demonstrate the analytics involved in reconciling real-world problems using Jewish law.

Deen decries the perfunctory experience of ritual, law, and prayer in Judaism. Some may experience things this way, but part of appreciating the deeper meaning of an Orthodox Jewish life has to come from within. At times he invokes the old saw (brought up many times by others, such as Bill Maher), that there could be no divinity to the Five Books of Moses because the character of God therein is too ruthless and cruel. Religious people, of course, interpret the Torah in a different way. These points are sometimes a distraction from the narrative, but they are not the purpose of the book.

One odd reference was his interpretation of a story referred to in the Talmud of the four rabbis who entered the garden ('pardes' in Hebrew), where only one--Rabbi Akiva--emerged unscathed. Deen states that this was an admonishment against studying Filosofia (philosophy), whereas the standard interpretation is that the story is a warning against studying Kabalah (Jewish mysticism) when one is unprepared. Another interpretation, closely aligned to this, would be an admonishment against using one of the secret names of God to elevate one's soul to a higher level than one is able to tolerate. It makes sense that a more modern interpretation might be used as leverage to deter people from secular culture or philosophy, but that seems far flung from the original meaning of the story. However, I can easily imagine that Deen might have learned this interpretation by his Skverer rebbes.

Of course, given that Deen felt forced to adhere to Jewish law and tradition, he did lead a perfunctory existence that lacked any real soul. Nevertheless, just because a Hasidic life lacks meaning for Deen personally, this doesn't mean that it isn't meaningful for those who live it every day. He mentions the portrayals of Hasidim by Martin Buber, Abraham Joshua Heschel, and Elie Wiesel and 'wincing' at how these authors 'romanticized' Hassidic life. Not having lived among the Skverers, I can't comment on what life is like in that community. I will say that there is acknowledgement that there is an overabundance of stress on ritual and law rather than spirituality in greater Orthodoxy.

It is ironic that such a problem exists within Hasidus today: that specific branch of Judaism was started in the late 1700s by Rabbi Yisroel ben Eliezer (known as the Baal Shem Tov or 'Good Master of the Name') specifically as a spiritualist backlash against the rationalist brand of Judaism practiced in Eastern Europe at the time.

Remarkably, the rabbinical school of Yeshiva University--a non-Hasidic Jewish institution of Jewish higher learning that is an extension of the Eastern European rationalist tradition--is now actually teaching courses in what they call 'neo-Chassidus.' Through neo-Chassidus, Yeshiva University is trying to reintroduce the mystical and spiritual aspects of Hasidus back into Jewish life; to bring the 'inner light' back into daily religious practice and the study of Torah. I believe that this is the inspired approach to Judaism that Buber, Heschel, and Wiesel were referring to. More remarkably, one of the course directors of the neo-Chassidus program at Yeshiva University has stated that Hasidim often attend his classes to rekindle the fire of the Baal Shem Tov, because Hasidus for them had become a way of life, not a fire.

The purpose of Deen's book seems twofold. First, writing the book was almost certainly a catharsis for him. Second, he wants to make sure that those who take the same journey as he did know that others came before them and that they can seek solace in knowing that they are not alone and have support.

There are those in the Orthodox Jewish community who will want to censure Deen and will decry his book, but I think that this would be a grave mistake. The issues that Deen has brought up in his book are real issues that matter. Those issues will not go away if you ignore them. If we want to keep our children within the fold, we have to realize that Judaism is not a cookie cutter religion. There is real flexibility, we just have to own up to it. The fact that someone is not cut out for life in a small, insular, Jewish community doesn't mean that they have to leave their faith behind altogether. There are plenty of options--yes, even within Orthodoxy--that allow you to interact with the 'outside' world. Losing faith in 'ultra-orthodoxy' does not necessarily mean that you have to leave Judaism altogether.

This is one of those books that is not only a great read but sticks with you long after you read it. It is not one of those true-life stories that ends with an all-out victory, but it is a gripping memoir that will keep you reading until you finish it. And when you're done, you will still have a lot to think about. Recommended.

Memorable moment, authentic and real
By Joel B. Gordon
I was first attracted to "All Who Go" by an excerpt in "The Forward" which related Shulem Deen's experiences as a teacher. I am a teacher, and his account rang true, an uncommon experience for me. I am well educated in Jewish life and texts, and I was delighted, charmed and enveloped by the story of Shulem's youth and young adult years in New Square. The scenes were so vivid and authentic, nuanced and accessible to this non-Hassidic reader. I have read so many pieces on Hassidic life that were patently dishonest or shallow; this was spot-on!
Deen is a very adept storyteller, and the book would not let me put it down. The little crises of marriage, child-rearing, struggling with faith, rebelling — all of the challenges captured my imagination, as I followed young Shulem working through problem after problem. He was indomitable.
Until he wasn't. I did not expect the narrative to progress as it did. I don't want to spoil it for you, but understand that a clever, enticing little book developes layers and layers of thoughtful struggles and profound inner pain and potential. The Shulem Deen of the last chapter is much less entertaining, and much more important, than the pleasant fellow who welcomes you into his memoir.

Shulem Deen was determined to find the Truth, and not live a lie. A Triumphant and Heartbreaking journey
By Gina C. Moss
All Who Go Do Not Return: A Memoir, is a Memoir like none I have ever read. It concerns the religious, spiritual and community-wide struggle of the writer, Shulem Deen. He was raised and he lived in an insular, Orthodox Jewish life. Starting as a child, he challenged authority, questioned unproven "truth", and resented the constant scrutiny and control inside the small world in which he felt trapped. We come to know his childhood and parents in flash backs. As the book begins Deen is being matched with a bride. He will only meet her for a few minutes before they become joined for life. Deen carefully, and I believe fairly describes the life he led and what began to tear down the wall of fear and threats. He dares to go to a library! Listen to the radio, and other forbidden activities. I found the story so upsetting at parts, I kept setting the book aside and declaring to my husband that I would not read anymore!! And yet, I was draw back, again, to find out how our main character was surviving the disaster he had made of his life. Only when my husband told me the conclusion, would I dare to finish the story. Shulem Deen's life is a brilliant, brave, and yet tragic human journey. But it is one we must all take, when we are determined to live the truth, and not live a lie.
