‘Merchants of Menace’ gives the facts, as known, of the notorious Nugan Hand bank up to 9 November 2015 when author Peter Butt found fugitive Michael Hand alive and well in the small American town of Iadho Falls.
Hand disappeared in June 1980 after his partner Frank Nugan was found dead in his Mercedes outside Lithgow NSW beside a 30-calibre rifle in an apparent suicide.
The Australian based Nugan Hand bank collapsed with debts of over $50 million in 1980 with evidence of money laundering, tax avoidance, violation of banking laws and suspicion of drug dealing, gun-running, organized crime and clandestine intelligence activities with rumours of CIA and organized crime involvement.
Presumably, justice will now be done and the full story revealed. Hence Peter Butt’s book is a timely primer to the continuing investigation of this dark era of Australian history which includes political connections, the 1977 murder of anti-drugs campaigner and Liberal Party candidate Donald Mackay in Griffith and aspects of the Vietnam war. The question is when.

Amazing story of bankers to the criminally minded. The CIA connections are also so unbelievable as to be real. I kept wondering if modern banking systems would still allow something similar to happen now.
