A Usable Classic

Muir's book is a venerable classic, enjoyed for its whimsical & attractive illustrations, light-hearted philosophizing, wry sense of humor, & period charm. It also remains the best practical book of Volkswagen maintenance & repair that is to be had. Many a time I've found myself beside the road with the Idiot's Guide in one hand, & pair of pliers in the other, & my head in the engine compartment. The Idiot's Guide has yet to fail me.
It's comprehensive in scope (with some minor exceptions such as transmission overhaul, which in any case would be folly to attempt with nothing more than the guidance of a book of this nature). As other reviewers have mentioned, the hand-drawn illustrations are top-notch, & isolate the detail needed for the task being described. The descriptions themselves are clear & effective, if interspersed with lots of woolly rambling & wisecracking. In fact, the digressions & style in which the nuts-&-bolts advice is couched are actually an asset to understanding the maintenance & repair of your VW. They instill a mindset that will be one of the best tools in your toolkit.
If you own an old VW, you ought to have the Idiot's Guide too. With this & perhaps the Official Service Manual (i.e., ISBN 0837600944 ), you'll have all the know-how you'll need to keep your VW going for another thirty years.

This is the ultimate VW book and truly is the "bible" for the "People's Car."
This book is a must have and if you were able to have only one book about the VW this one would be it.
This book shows the reader the most important facts on how to keep your Beetle on the road and in "tip top" condition.
If you were to ask any volkswagen owner about this book they would tell you that this one is the only one you need.
This book has been around for years and is highly recommended.
This is the best VW book ever written!!

Classic Yet Timeless Information

Here is a classic, complete guide for repairing or rebuilding an air cooled Volkswagen. I bought this to replace one I bought 30 years ago that was worn beyond repair and covered with greasy finger prints. The writer is extremely funny but very informative often giving homegrown tips and tricks for performing procedures. The illustrations are pure art worthy of framing. I highly recommend this book to anyone resurrecting a classic Volkswagen.
