This book introduces a new method for determining the authorship of Renaissance plays. Based on the rapid rate of change in English grammar in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, socio-historical linguistic evidence allows us to distinguish the hands of Renaissance playwrights within play texts. The present study focuses on Shakespeare: his collaborations with Fletcher and Middleton; and the apocryphal plays. Among the plays examined are Henry VIII, The Two Noble Kinsmen, Macbeth, Pericles, and Sir Thomas More. The findings of the book allow us to be more confident about the divisions of collaborative plays, and confirm the status of Edward III as a strong candidate for inclusion in the canon. Using graphs to present statistical data in a readily comprehensible form, the book also contains a wealth of information about the history of the English language during a period of far-reaching change. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of Shakespeare studies, English literature, the history of the language and linguistics.

A very convincing approach to untangling co-authors' contributions in Shakespeare

Jonathan Hope here is analyzing Shakespeare plays that are universally recognized to have had co-authors to identify which author wrote which scenes (or monologues) and whether there was obvious post-editing by the other co-author. He comes up with one linguistic marker that is immune to printers' changes and superficial editing.
This book is a great antidote to all the hand-waving about stylistic differences within Shakespeare plays. The science here is clearly presented and critiqued. I especially like the author's discussion of the limits of the techniques he discovered and why not all co-authored plays (e.g., "Titus Andronicus") could be analyzed this way. Hope analyzes other linguistic markers that have been suggested (you/thou) and explains why they are less reliable.
This book has the feel of a dissertation edited for general publication. That may be off-putting in the opening chapter, but keep going. This is one of the most accessible and persuasive dissertations I have read. The book was exciting for me because the linguistics was easy to grasp and because the result enabled the reader to get a sense of how co-authored plays might have been put together and how, even though the co-authors might try to keep the style homogeneous, some subconscious habits shine through.
Due to serendipity, I was able to put the author's methods to the test. My edition (Oxford) of one of the plays differed from Hope's in the separation of Act V into scenes. By identifying other possible scene breaks (by entrances and exits), I was able, using Hope's method, to reconstruct with some confidence the scene arrangement in the edition Hope used. An exciting exercise for this reader!
I would recommend this book for people who have read a lot of Shakespeare, have noticed the odd changes in style in some plays and are wondering about the collaborative construction of Elizabethan plays.
Now if only someone could untangle the co-authors in the Henry VI trilogy...
