With photographs, flyers and posters from the streets and clubs of hip-hop, "Yes, Yes Y'all" tells its stories in voices that bristle with vitality, character, humour and menace, taking us to places where it all began - the Bronx, Brooklyn and Harlem - and describing the emergence of the music from its roots through the first Bronx parties thrown by DJ Kool Herc in 1973-4 to the release of the Suger Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" in 1979, and the emergence of the new school in the mid 1980s. Fricke spent six years conducting interviews with hip-hop stars from the old school and the new: Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Caz, Grandmaster Flash, Grand Wizard Theodore, DJ Kool Herc, Melle Mel, Rahiem, Tony Tone, DMC, Ice T and Dr Dre and other originators of the hip-hop sound. These are woven into a narrative containing detail, controversy and emotional power.

About the Author
Jim Fricke is Senior Curator at the Experience Music Project (EMP) in Seattle, Washington. He was curator of the Hip-Hop Nation exhibit, and has been active in the Northwest music scene for more than twenty-five years. He lives in Seattle. Charlie Ahearn is a filmmaker whose 1982 landmark film Wild Style has become a hip-hop classic. He lives in New York City.
