From the Author
The process of developing the Can Do Workplace model and writing the book took me on a special journey into the worlds of four exceptional nonprofit organizations that live and breathe "can do" every day! The hundreds of hours of conversations with the leaders, staff and volunteers from around the world helped me realize in new ways how powerful, meaningful and important our work in the nonprofit sector really is. I see our sector as being at a critical juncture of great growth, competing priorities, external pressures, yet in possession of "mission," that is its unique strength within the fabric of the American culture.
The Can Do Model is built on gratitude and mission, and driven by practices that promote strong alignment, good decision-making, a focus on change & growth and perfecting an organization's "secret sauce." All that said, if I had to boil the "Can Do" model down to one summary sentence, I would use this one that learned from Momentous Institute, and which was echoed over and over again throughout the interview, research, and writing process: it all starts with connected relationships!
It is in that spirit that I invite you to read The Can Do Workplace and hope that you find both concepts and hands-on ideas and stronger, connected relationships that equip and motivate you and your colleagues to make a Can Do difference in your little part of the world.

In the nonprofit sector we talk a lot about mission, vision and values, but struggle to align these CORE elements of who we are as an organization with a sustainable business model and sound organizational practices. Too often we sacrifice the foundation of the CAN DO Workplace model-mission (our motivation and focus) and gratitude (taking good care of our people--our most valuable resource) for practices that we hope will enable us to stay in business. The CAN DO Workplace offers several key strategies a nonprofit leader can use to ensure that mission and gratitude provide the 'north star' needed to facilitate your success. Read this book to help you reset your organization and remind you why you work in the nonprofit sector in service to the populations and communities you care about.

I even learned something about my own organization
By Amazon Customer
It is always a bit scary to learn how someone else sees your organization - but it is quite novel to learn something from how they do! But Cathi Coridan taught me a lot about my own organization, Warm Heart. She turned it into a new organization in my eyes, allowed me to see real strength in what had seemed to be nothing more than the obvious way to do things. So I read the whole book. I have no idea how the other directors saw their organizations through her eyes, but Can Do Workplace gave me a really practical, applicable way of seeing the essentials of an effective organization. It made me feel good about a few things - and made me go "whoops!" about more than a few. What started out as a vanity read turned into a pretty good exercise in self-criticism and (I hope) growth.

I bought this to read while doing some research on the functioning of an agency. I didn't find it particularly helpful, but maybe someone else would.
